Buddy4Study: Share with us a brief background about your academic and professional journey until now.

Rohit: I completed my B.Tech. in Civil Engineering from Giani Zail Singh Punjab Technical University Campus, Bathinda in the year 2016. During the final year of my engineering degree, I co-founded a startup named GharTool (a home services-based company) with my friends. It was only then that I realised the need for management and business knowledge. I went on to join XOR Labs Pvt. Ltd. (a digital marketing company) in Mohali and worked there for one and a half year before joining IISc for my Masters.

Buddy4Study: What motivated you to pursue your management course?

Rohit: As I said, when I was working for my startup I felt that I lack domain knowledge which was a major hurdle for me. And after joining XOR Labs as well, I felt, despite doing my work I was unable to connect with it. These two major incidents motivated me to pursue a management course.

Buddy4Study: What were the key challenges faced by you during the course of your journey to reach here?

Career Assessment Test

Rohit: I started appearing for CAT entrance exam in the year 2015. Though it was a non-serious attempt and I couldn’t score well at that time, it gave me a flavour of how MBA entrance exams are. It took me three CAT attempts, around 16+ entrance exams, 30+ mocks and 10+ interviews to finally reach here. I think the major challenge that I faced was lack of proper guidance. Coaching institutes make these exams look like a mountain, whereas with proper guidance and research these can be tackled with very easily. Other challenges included funding of my masters’ education and even before that, funding of application fees of various colleges and travelling expenses. But the amount of support that I got from my family, friends and colleagues during my work experience, helped me a lot.

Buddy4Study: What has been your source of inspiration?

Rohit: I come from a small town, Dinanagar in Punjab, it is one of the least developed regions being very close to the International border. I always dreamed big but due to lack of proper guidance I couldn’t do well after my 12th but was fortunate enough to end up in a State Government college. And, this time I was ready to devote time towards my dream of pursuing masters from one of the premier institutes and backed it with proper research. So whenever I felt low, I used to look back at my childhood and then ahead, towards my dreams. I guess that’s what inspired me along with the determination of lifting the financial status of my family.

Buddy4Study: How has your family supported you in your venture to pursue this course?

Rohit: To be honest, if my family were not that supportive, I would not have been able to pull this off. I and my brother have been raised by my mother and maternal grandparents. After they passed away, my mother has been the constant source of inspiration and support. She never questioned my abilities. Even when I failed, she would encourage me to work hard towards achieving my dreams. So yes, my mom and brother not only supported me financially, they also gave emotional, psychological and every other support they could offer.

Buddy4Study: How did you come to know about the Capital First Scholarship? What were the steps followed to avail the scholarship?

Rohit: I came to know about Capital First Scholarship through Buddy4Study. I applied for the scholarship on Buddy4Study platform and then appeared for the telephonic interview, uploaded the required documents and in a couple of months, results came on the platform itself. And the scholarship was released after 3-4 months. I am really thankful to Buddy4Study for making the process so easy and smooth.

Buddy4Study: What are your ambitions in the future and how do you plan to execute them?

Rohit: I want to have a data analytics startup of my own, which would work towards solving various environmental and social problems with the help of data and give back to the society that way. I plan on having industry experience of 3-4 years after completing my Masters of Management in Business Analytics, and then combine the industry experience with the domain knowledge and connections to work towards opening my own company.

Buddy4Study: Any piece of advice that you would like to impart to other potential aspirants like you who are constrained by various challenges towards pursuing higher education?

Rohit: I would just like to say that challenges are part and parcel of life, they are only there to test your determination. If you are determinant enough, with proper research, plan and support, there is no challenge big enough to be tackled with. If you feel lost, just find people who have been through the same phase and ask for their guidance. Use LinkedIn for that purpose and connect with industry experts and students in various B-Schools for guidance. I myself was guided by a few and now I try to guide others through a couple of Whatsapp groups and help them reach their dream colleges. At last, I would like to conclude it with this line, “It’s always better to test your limits, or the limits will soon test you.” Good Luck.
