The National Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (NMMS) exam was introduced by the Department of School Education & Literacy in 2008 under the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD). The NMMS (National Merit-cum-Means Scholarship) is approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA ). The major aim of the NMMS scholarship is to prevent the number of dropouts for Classes 10 to 12. Every year students of Class 8 are awarded ₹12,000 for secondary education.

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) provides 1,00,000 scholarships annually. Every month  ₹1,000 is given to the students that belong to the economically weaker section. However, the student must pass Class 8 from a recognized board. Additionally, their family income should be equal to or less than ₹3,50,000 per annum.

Students can find NMMS 2025 application forms online. For every state or Union Territories (UTs). 

  • The forms are available on the official website of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). 
  • The application form for NMMS 2025 can only be submitted offline. 
  • Also, students need to pay a minimal fee of ₹50 to ₹100 (varies per state).

The passing marks for NMMS exam vary for different categories of students. The applicants must obtain at least 55% for the General category and 50% for Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Physically Handicapped (PH) (Class 7 final exam).

How many tests are there in the NMMS exam?

The students have to sit for 2 papers. One is the “Scholar Ability Test” (SAT) and the second is the “Mental Ability Test” (MAT)
