Somerville College (A constituent college of the University of Oxford) has joined hands with the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development (OICSD) and Piramal family to launch Dr Gita Piramal Scholarship. The aim of the scholarship is to offer financial assistance to Indian students pursuing higher education at the University of Oxford. Under the scholarship, exceptional Indian students will be provided with financial support to cater to their full tuition fee and a living stipend. Instituted to help students from the economically disadvantaged backgrounds, the scholarship has been announced as a pilot for 5 years.
The announcement of the scholarship comes to honour Dr Gita Piramal’s exceptional contribution to both academia and corporate leadership. It must be noted that Dr Piramal has been closely associated with Somerville College and has served the college in the capacity of a Senior Associate Fellow and mentored myriad students.
Empowering Through Education
Her unconventional research on corporate India and authored books, which are included in various MBA programs worldwide, have left a huge impact on the perspectives of emerging business leaders.
On the occasion, Dr Piramal stated, “India is my family home, and Somerville has been my intellectual home for many years. This scholarship will allow talented young individuals from India to thrive in Oxford’s rich academic setting, contributing to the nation’s future progress.”
Commenting on her remarkable contribution, the principal of Somerville College, Jan Royall said, “It is a privilege to honour such a long-standing friend of the College in this manner. Dr Piramal’s name will be linked to empowering exceptional Indian students, providing them with the opportunity to experience a world-class education at Oxford and to make significant contributions back to India.”
It must be noted that since its commencement in 2013, OICSD has helped nearly 60 Indian students at Oxford, many of whom have gone back to India to address critical issues in healthcare, technology, and climate change.
