New Delhi, 18 April 2022: On 17 April, over 1.8 lakh Class 8 students from the state of Gujarat appeared for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) examination. The examination was conducted by the State Examination Board (SEB) and the students who crack the exam will be awarded with a full scholarship worth Rs 48,000.
Note: A total of 5,097 students are eligible for the scholarship scheme within the state.

The ‘National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme’ (NMMSS) is a Central Sector Scheme launched in May 2008 to provide scholarships for meritorious students of Classes 9 to 12.
The objectives of the ‘National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme’ (NMMSS) are as follows:
- To award scholarships to meritorious students of economically weaker sections to arrest their drop-out at Class 8.
- To encourage them to continue their study and complete the secondary stage.

NMMSS and NSP – Details
The NMMSS Scheme can be found on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), which has been developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for streamlining and fast-tracking the release of Scholarships across Ministries/Departments with efficiency, transparency, and reliability.
Below are the steps to be followed to apply for NMMSS on the NSP:
- Students from different States and UTs, who have qualified in the Management Aptitude Test (MAT) and Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) under NMMSS must register themselves on NSP.
- The applications are verified online on the portal by the prescribed state authorities.
- The final list of eligible candidates, complete in all respects, is provided to the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) or Ministry of Education (MoE) by the NSP team for sanction of the scholarship.
- Thereafter, the Ministry of Education (MoE) sanctions funds and releases them to the State Bank of India (SBI) – the implementing bank for the Scheme.
- The SBI disburses the scholarships to students directly by electronic transfer into their bank accounts under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) through Public Financial Management System (PFMS).
