The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) was set up in the year 1983 to foster the development of higher mathematics in India. It formulates policies for the development of mathematics and extends in the development and establishment of mathematical centres.
NBHM basically offers financial support only to Indian institutions and citizens. Currently, the NBHM grants Postdoctoral fellowships, PhD scholarships, and M.Sc. Scholarships for research/education in mathematics, along with research projects in higher mathematics.

National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) Scholarship 2025 – Eligibility Criteria
NBHM Masters Scholarship 2025
The Master’s Scholarship is intended to encourage and support talented students to study mathematics at the Master’s level.
- Indian nationals are eligible to apply.
- Students who shall join (the first year of) a Master’s programme in Mathematics for the academic year 2025-26.
- The applicants who have joined the first year of such a programme in the academic year 2024-25 are eligible.
- Applicants must have completed a B.Sc. in Mathematics.
- Students must not have received the NBHM Master’s Scholarship in the past.
NBHM PhD Scholarship 2025
- Indian nationals are eligible for this scheme.
- Students must be selected for the scholarship, following the test and a subsequent (doctoral) interview.
- Applicants must be enrolled by September 2026, or be currently enrolled in a PhD programme in Mathematics.
- They must not have drawn benefits under the (NBHM) Doctoral Scholarship in the past.
National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) Scholarship 2025 – Awards
Master’s Scholarship
The Master’s scholarship offers a monthly stipend of ₹8,000 which is payable during the two year period (or part thereof) of a Master’s programme in Mathematics.
PhD Scholarship
The selected applicants will receive a monthly stipend of ₹37,000 for the first two years, to be increased to ₹42,000 per month for the subsequent years, based on the recommendation of the committee appointed by the scholar’s institution to monitor the scholar’s progress. It also includes an annual contingency grant of ₹40,000.
(Note: The above rates and durations apply to a selected candidate joining a PhD programme afresh. For those who are already enrolled in a PhD programme prior to August 2025 and those in the Post-Master’s part of an Integrated PhD programme, the requirements may vary.)

National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) Scholarship 2025 – Selection Process
The selection for the Master’s and PhD scholarships will be based on the different stages mentioned below.
Zones and Zonal Coordinators
For the administrative purpose involved in the selection process for this scholarships, the country is divided into five geographical zones, each headed by a coordinator.
Written Test
It measures the mathematical skills required for pursuing Mathematics at the Master’s and Doctoral levels through a written test judged by the committee of experts appointed by NBHM.
Interview Shortlists
For each test answer script, two scores, called M-score and D-score (M for Master’s, D for Doctoral), shall be calculated. The M-score shall just be the raw score of the test potentially unaffected by negative marking; the D-score shall be calculated by giving a higher weightage to the scores on certain sections (those with questions on more advanced topics), again unaffected by negative marking.
Interviews
The interviews for the scholarship are generally conducted online. They are tentatively scheduled to be held in March. The final selection for the scholarships shall be based primarily on the performance on the test and interview, although the selection committee shall be at liberty to take into account other aspects of the academic track record.

- Navigate to the ‘Online Registration’ tab.
- Register and validate a genuine email address.
- A registration number will be generated at the time of registration, which uniquely identifies the account.
- Click on the ‘Login’ button and enter the required details.
- Choose the scholarship student wants to apply for.
- Fill in the required details in the application form and upload the required documents.
- Click on the ‘Submit’ button.

- Application is not considered complete unless the application fee is paid and the application is submitted (within the deadline) with all details duly filled out, including the transaction number (from SBI Collect acknowledging the payment of the application fee).
