MHRD Scholarship – The Ministry of Human Resource Development plays a significant role in the education sector of the nation. Contributing effectively to the socio-economic development of the country, the ministry functions through its two distinctive departments namely, the Department of School Education & Literacy and the Department of Higher Education. Both the departments together work for the upliftment of educational standards across the nation. The ministry offers a number of MHRD scholarships to provide financial assistance to both school and college students.

There are two types of MHRD scholarships that the ministry offers – one at the national level and the other at the external level. The national level scholarships are run by different departments under MHRD. MHRD Scholarship – Eligibility Criteria

What are the eligibility conditions to be followed to apply for an MHRD scholarship? Is there any family income requirement for such scholarships? Are these scholarships applicable only for academically meritorious students? The eligibility conditions may vary from scholarship to scholarship. These conditions majorly cover the student’s age, their academic merit, annual family income, state domicile and educational qualification. 1. Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students
  • The scholarship is open for students who are pursuing a regular medical or engineering course from an AICTE, DCI, or MCI recognised college.
  • The students need to be above the 80th percentile of successful candidates in the relevant stream in class 12.
  • The annual income of the family should not be more than INR 8 Lakh from all sources.
  • It is also important that the student is not in receipt of any other scholarship.
  • The students pursuing their studies through correspondence or distance learning cannot apply.
2. Prime Minister Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) for Jammu Kashmir
  • The scholarship is applicable for students who are domicile of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The students must have passed class 12th or 10+3 diploma from J&K board, CBSE or J&K state polytechnic.
  • The students who are willing to study outside J&K can also apply.
  • The annual income of the family should be INR 8 Lakh or below.
3. National Scheme of Incentive to Girls for Secondary Education (NSIGSE)
  • The scholarship is open for girl students of SC/ST communities who are enrolled in class 9th.
  • The applicants are required to have passed the class 8th examination from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and enrol in class 9th in a state government, local body or government-aided schools
  • Only unmarried girls below the age of 16 years can apply.
4. National Means Cum Merit Scholarship
  • The scholarship is open for students of class 9 and their continuation of studies in class 10 to 12.
  • The minimum percentage requirement in class 8th exam is 55% or equivalent (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST).
  • In order to appear for the selection test of the scholarship, the applicants need to have obtained a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent in class 7th.
  • The annual income of the family should be less than INR 1.50 Lakh.
5. Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF)
  • The students who are currently studying in the first year or have completed B.Tech, M.Tech or Integrated MSc from IITs/IIISc/NITs/IISERs/IIITs can apply.
  • The students admitted through UCEED/JEE, KVPY or SCB can also apply.
  • The students who have completed the course in the past five years can also apply.
6. AICTE Pragati Scholarship for Girls
  • This scholarship is open for girl students who have taken admission to the first year of diploma/degree program at an AICTE recognised institution.
  • The annual income of the family should be less than INR 8 Lakh from all sources.
  • The scholarship is applicable for up to two girl children of the family.
7. AICTE-Saksham Scholarship Scheme
  • The scholarship is open for differently-abled students with disability level not less than 40% who have taken admission in the first year of technical degree/diploma course at an AICTE recognised institution.
  • The annual income of the family should be less than INR 8 Lakh from all sources.
8. Commonwealth Scholarships in the United Kingdom
  • The students who have completed or are about to complete their bachelor’s degree or postgraduate degree can apply.
  • The minimum percentage of marks to be obtained by the applicant should be 65% or above in Science and 60% or above in Social Science.
  • The age of the applicant should not be more than 40 years.
  • The applicant needs to be enrolled for an MPhil degree leading to a PhD at a UK university.
9. New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships
  • The scholarship is open to students who are willing to study abroad in New Zealand.
  • The applicant must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree with minimum 65% marks.
10. Chinese Government Scholarships
  • The scholarship is open for undergraduate, masters, doctoral, general scholar and senior scholar level of studies.
  • For undergraduate studies, the students need to have passed class 12th with 60% marks and their age should be below 25 years.
  • For postgraduate studies, the students need to have passed graduation with 60% marks and their age should be below 35 years.
  • For doctoral studies, the students need to have passed postgraduation with 60% marks and their age should be below 40 years.
  • For general scholars, the students need to have completed at least 2 years of their undergraduate studies with 60% marks in qualifying examination and their age should be below 45 years.
  • For senior scholars, the applicants must be an associate professor or have a master’s degree with 60% marks and their age should be below 50 years.
11. South Korean Government Scholarships
  • The scholarship is open for master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral level of studies.
  • For Master’s level, the students must hold a bachelor’s degree and be under 40 years of age.
  • For Doctoral level, the students must hold a Master’s degree and be under 40 years of age.
  • For Postdoctoral level, the students must hold a doctoral degree/diploma and be under 45 years of age.
  • For Biotechnology and Electronic engineering, the candidates need to have secured 65% or more.
12. Japanese Government Scholarships
  • The scholarship is open for research level, master level PhD course.
  • The subjects applicable to the scholarship include humanities, social science, management studies, mathematical science, chemistry and chemical engineering, physics, and more.
  • The age of the applicants must be below 35 years.
  • For master’s degree and research level, the students need to hold a bachelor’s degree with minimum 65% marks.
  • For PhD degree, the students need to hold a master’s degree with minimum 65% marks in the relevant field.
13. Italian Government Scholarships
  • The scholarship is open for the study of master’s degree, PhD, Research and Italian language & culture courses.
  • For Master’s level of study, the students must be a graduate from India and should be below 28 years of age.
  • For PhD, the students must meet the qualification and entry requirements of the Italian University along with a letter of acceptance from them and their age should not be more than 30 years.
  • For research level, the students must be below 40 years of age and should submit the research project along with the letter of admission.
  • For Italian language and culture courses, the students have to provide proficiency certificate in the Italian language.
14. Mexican Government Scholarships
  • The scholarship is open for specialisation, master’s degree, doctorate and graduate level research.
  • An applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD degree with a GPA of 80 on a scale of 1 to 100.
  • The students are also required to have enrolled for a course at any of the participating institutions.
15. Israel Government Scholarships
  • The students who hold a letter of acceptance from an Israeli University/supervisor can apply.
  • The applicants need to have a master’s degree for research/specialisation in the field of Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Economics, Environment Studies, Biotechnology, Mass Communication and Business Management.
  • For the Hebrew Language and Literature course, the students must be pursuing a postgraduate course in the same subject.
  • The proficiency in English or Hebrew language is a must.
16. Brazilian Government Scholarships
  • This MHRD scholarship is open for residents of India between 18 and 25 years of age.
  • The applicants must have passed their class 12 board examination with at least 60% overall and with a minimum of 60% in English.
  • The students currently studying in class 12 can also apply but they have to present their final mark sheet and board certificate during the time of enrolment in a Brazilian University.
  • Proficiency in Portuguese language is also required.
17. Presidential Scholarships, Sri Lanka
  • The students pursuing bachelor’s degree courses can apply for the scholarship (It does not cover Engineering, Dentistry and Medicine).
  • The age of the applicant must be under 25 years.
18. Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship
  • The fellowship is open for students who maintain a uniform academic record with at least 60% marks in post-graduation and with a PhD degree in the respective subject field.
  • The scholars between the age of 30 years and 40 years can apply.
  • The students need to have an inclination towards an academic career in following specialisations –
    • History
    • Political Science
    • Economics
  • The applicants also need to have a minimum teaching experience of 3 years at graduate/postgraduate level after completing PhD.

MHRD Scholarship – Application Process

To apply for national level scholarships offered by MHRD, the students can apply online through the National Scholarship Portal or respective scholarship’s application portal. However, for external scholarships that are available for research, master’s and doctoral studies, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) runs its own online scholarship application portal with the name of “Sakshat”. MHRD Scholarship – Selection Process

  • The verification of applications will be done at two levels – institution level and State Education Board level.

3. National Scheme of Incentive to Girls for Secondary Education (NSIGSE) All eligible girls will receive the scholarship under this scheme.
4. National Means Cum Merit Scholarship The selection of scholars will be made through a selection test namely, Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Ability Test (SAT) conducted by each state/UT.
5. Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF) The selection of fellows will be made at two stages –

  • Shortlisting of application forms by Reviewers
  • Performance of the applicant in Written test or interview at a nodal institute.
6. AICTE Pragati Scholarship for Girls The selection of the candidates will be made on the basis of merit obtained by them in the qualifying examination.
7. AICTE-Saksham Scholarship Scheme The selection of the candidates will be based on their academic merit.
8. Commonwealth Scholarships in the United Kingdom The scholars will be selected by CSC’s (Commonwealth Scholarship Commission) selection committee on the basis of academic merit, quality of study plan and potential impact of candidate’s work on the development of their home country.
9. New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships The selection of candidates will be based on the interview conducted by the provider for shortlisted candidates only.
10. Chinese Government Scholarships The selection of candidates will be made on the basis of merit and interview conducted by the selection committee.
11. South Korean Government Scholarships The scholars will be shortlisted by the Selection Committee for the interview on the basis of merit.
12. Japanese Government Scholarships The selection of scholars will be made by the Government of Japan on the basis of merit.
13. Italian Government Scholarships The initial level of selection will be made by MHRD and the final selection will be made by the Italian Government.
14. Mexican Government Scholarships The initial level of selection will be made by MHRD and the final selection will be made by the Mexican Government.
15. Israel Government Scholarships The selection of the candidates will be made on the basis of merit.
16. Brazilian Government Scholarships The selection of the candidates will be made on the basis of merit.
17. Presidential Scholarships, Sri Lanka The selection of candidates will be made by the Government of Sri Lanka.

MHRD Scholarship – Rewards

How much financial reward can a student get through MHRD scholarship? Of course, each MHRD scholarship offers a variable set of rewards to students who meet the respective eligibility conditions. The scholarship amount is decided by the ministry itself depending on the student’s level of study.
