New Delhi, 11 April 2022 – The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has revised the fee structure for all AICTE engineering colleges and universities, along with all institutions that offer engineering and tech courses in the country. As per the revision, the council has now fixed the minimum and the maximum fee that any AICTE approved university or college can charge to students. This has been done to prevent the commercialisation of technical education in India.
The council had already fixed the upper (maximum) limit for technical education fee during its previous report (submitted in April 2015). However, there was no minimum limit decided and many institutions were facing issues with fixing a minimum limit that would not impede studentsโ education while taking care of the institutionsโ smooth operation. Due to this, the new fee structure has been introduced that has fixed both lower and upper fee limits for engineering courses.ย
Note: In 2015, the AICTE committee had suggested that the maximum fee for UG four-year engineering courses be fixed at Rs. 1.44 lakh to Rs. 1.58 lakh per annum.

Why did AICTE Revise the Fee Structure?
As the 2015 revision did not address the minimum fee issue, many private engineering colleges were petitioning AICTE to set a fixed lower limit for tuition fee.ย
This is because as per a ruling by the Supreme Court, the fee charged by private institutes will be decided by state governments until a national-level fee fixation committee gives its recommendations. Due to this, many institutions were accusing state authorities, including that of Tamil Nadu and Telangana, of fixing impractical minimum fee limits, which caused operational difficulties for these colleges.
Taking in account these petitions, the government had requested the Srikrishna Committee of the AICTE to take a fresh look at the fee structure and come up with a ceiling on minimum charges.ย
