What Does “Payment Successful” Mean on NSP and PFMS?
The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) routes all scholarship disbursements through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). Each payment passes through three stages before it reaches a student’s account.
| PFMS Status | What It Actually Means |
| Payment Sanctioned by Agency | The ministry or department has approved the amount; funds are yet to be transferred to PFMS |
| Under Process with Bank | PFMS has sent the credit instruction to your bank; allow 24 to 48 hours |
| Transaction Successful | PFMS has completed its role; the instruction has reached the bank |
| Payment Rejected by Bank | The bank could not credit the amount; usually due to Aadhaar seeding or account issues |
“Transaction Successful” on PFMS means the payment instruction has been sent to and acknowledged by your bank. It does not always confirm that the amount has been credited to your account. If your bank encounters a technical issue, an account problem, or an Aadhaar seeding mismatch at that moment, the transaction may be internally marked as “Deemed Success” at the bank level but remain uncredited.
Why Is NSP Payment Showing Success But Money Not Received?
The most common reasons are as follows.
1. Aadhaar not seeded with NPCI: NSP scholarship payments are routed through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) via Aadhaar-based payment. If your bank account is not mapped with NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), the credit is returned even when PFMS shows success.
2. Dormant or inactive bank account: An account with no transactions over a long period is classified as dormant by the bank. DBT credits to dormant accounts are typically rejected.
3. Name mismatch between Aadhaar and bank records: Even a minor spelling difference between the account holder’s name on the bank passbook and the name on Aadhaar can cause a failed credit despite a successful PFMS status.
4. Outdated IFSC code: Bank mergers in recent years changed IFSC codes for millions of accounts. Payments sent to an old IFSC code fail at the bank’s end.
5. KYC not completed at the bank: Accounts with incomplete or expired KYC are blocked for receiving DBT credits.
6. Processing delay: A legitimate delay of up to two to three working days can occur between the PFMS success status and the actual credit appearing in your passbook.

How to Check Whether Your NSP Scholarship Payment Is Actually Credited
Before escalating, confirm the payment status through the steps below.
1. Open pfms.nic.in, click on ‘Know Your Payment’, and enter your bank account number and bank name to view the latest payment record and transaction reference number.
2. Check your bank passbook or statement for the credited amount. If using net banking, filter by the date range when the scholarship was processed.
3. Visit resident.uidai.gov.in/bank-mapper and confirm which bank account is currently linked to your Aadhaar number. If it shows an old or incorrect account, the amount may have been credited there instead.
4. If your bank account shows no credit but PFMS shows “Transaction Successful,” note the UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) number from the PFMS screen. This is the key reference your bank needs to trace the transaction.
How to Resolve NSP Payment Not Received After a Success Status
Follow these steps in order.
Step 1: Visit your bank branch
Carry the UTR or payment reference number from PFMS and request the bank to trace the transaction. Most cases where the payment reached the bank but was not credited are resolved here within a few working days. Ask the branch to confirm whether Aadhaar NPCI seeding is active on your account; if not, submit the seeding form at the branch.
Step 2: Contact your Institute Nodal Officer (INO)
If the bank cannot trace the payment or identifies it as a DBT routing issue, report the matter to your college’s Institute Nodal Officer with your NSP Application ID, OTR number, PFMS transaction reference, and a screenshot of the success status. The INO can escalate the case through the ministry.
Step 3: File a grievance on the NSP portal
Log in to scholarships.gov.in, go to the ‘Services’ section, and raise an online grievance. Include your Application ID, the PFMS transaction reference number, and a brief description. Complaints with a reference number are resolved faster.
Step 4: Escalate to CPGRAMS
If the grievance on NSP is not resolved within 30 days, file a complaint on pgportal.gov.in (CPGRAMS). Select the ministry under which your scholarship falls. A response is typically issued within 30 days of filing.
