NIRF Ranking 2025: IIT Madras Retains Top Spot for 7th Year in a Row, IISc Bangalore Bags 2nd Place

The Ministry of Education has released the NIRF ranking 2025 via online mode at nirfindia.org. For the seventh consecutive year, IIT Madras secured the top spot in the overall category, followed by IISC Bangalore right behind at second position.

IIT Madras doesn’t only boast of ranking based on its academic excellence, but also continues its legacy by excelling and maintaining the premiere position in innovation sustainable development categories too. 

This year marks the 10th edition of the ranking, which has been announced for 17 categories, including Overall, Universities, Colleges, Research Institutions, Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Dental, Law, Architecture and Planning, Agriculture and Allied Sectors, Open University, Skill University, State Public University and SDG Institutions. More than 14,000 colleges participated in the NIRF Ranking 2025 out of which 200 colleges successfully secured rank in the overall category.

IITs continued their dominance this year also and secured top 7 positions with IISC Bangalore the only exception at second place. The top six positions in the overall category remained unchanged in comparison to last year.

NIRF Ranking 2025 Analysis: Overall Category

While a majority of the colleges in top 20 succeeded in retaining their positions, there are few colleges whose rankings have altered this year. 

  • AIIMS Delhi and IIT Roorkee swapped positions with IIT Roorkee climbing to 7th spot and AIIMS slipping to 8th position.
  • Banaras Hindu University improved from its last year’s 11th ranking and breached the top 10 mark by bagging the 10th position.
  • JNU Delhi also bettered its position and jumped from 10th in 2024 to 9th in 2025. With a score of 64.97, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham climbed one position up to 17th.
  • BITS Pilani moved up by 7 positions from 23rd in 2024 to 16th in 2025. Similarly, Homi Bhabha National Institute took a jump of seven positions. The institute was placed at 27th in 2024 and jumped to 20th in 2025.
  • IIT Guwahati slipped out of top 10, dropping to 11th position from 10th in 2024.
  • Jadavpur University also witnessed a decline of one position. Its ranking dropped from 17th to 18th spot in 2025.
  • Aligarh Muslim University NIRF ranking dropped from 16th in 2024 to 19th 2025. 

NIRF Ranking 2025: State-Wise (Overall Category)

Tamil Nadu dominated in the state-wise NIRF overall ranking with 17 institutions securing a place in top 100. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh aren’t far behind with 11 and 9 institutions respectively. An institute each from Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Puducherry also secured a place among top 100 institutions in India.

The colleges are evaluated on different parameters before National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Ranking is created.
