Describing the donation as a “Guru Dakshina,” Ambani expressed deep gratitude toward Prof. Sharma, whom he hailed as a “Rashtra Guru” (national teacher). He credited Sharma’s mentorship for shaping his own professional journey and significantly influencing India’s chemical industry and economic reforms.
“Professor Sharma once told me, ‘Mukesh, you have to do something big for ICT.’ Today, I am fulfilling that wish,” Ambani said during the event.
Talking about his mentor Prof. Sharma, in terms of being a silent architect of Indian economic reforms, Mukesh remarked, “Like my father Dhirubhai Ambani, he had a burning desire to change Indian industry from scarcity to global leadership,” adding that “these two bold visionaries believed that science and technology, in alliance with private entrepreneurship, would open the floodgates of prosperity.”

The ₹151 crore grant – the largest single donation in ICT’s history – will be used to bolster research, infrastructure, innovation, student scholarships, and global collaborations. Ambani, an ICT alumnus from the 1970s, spent over three hours at the campus, interacting with faculty, students, and dignitaries.
He also outlined four visionary ideas to elevate the institution and its role in nation-building, focusing on leadership in deep-tech, greater industry-academia synergy, encouraging value-based education, and national recognition of teachers and mentors.
Ambani’s gesture sets a new benchmark for alumni philanthropy and underscores the critical role of mentorship and private support in advancing India’s scientific and educational ecosystem.
