Kanyashree 2024 is an innovative scholarship programme started by the West Bengal Government to help female students financially in the field of education. Initially, this scholarship programme was available only for school and college students. However, in the year 2017, this scheme was extended to Postgraduate courses as well. 

Kanyashree Prakalpa Scholarship provides secondary education or vocational or sports training to girls from financially backward families to prevent and discourage their early marriages before 18 years of age. This scholarship programme offers an annual scholarship to girls between the ages of 13 to 18 each year, ensuring that the girls complete their education.

Kanyashree – About The Scholarship

Kanyashree Prakalpa Scheme is an initiative launched by the Department of Women Development and Social Welfare (DWD&SW), Government of West Bengal. It is a conditional cash transfer scheme, which aims at improving the status and wellbeing of female students. Besides, it also encourages families of girl children not to marry them off at a tender age and support them in higher education. Being a West Bengal government-sponsored scheme, it is implemented in all districts of the State.

Kanyashree – Benefits of the Scholarship Programme

There are several scholarship programmes under the Department of Women’s Development and Social Welfare. However, the West Bengal Government has chosen to set up the Kanyashree scholarship so that female students can avail financial benefits from the State government to continue their studies.

Besides this reason, there are several other reasons why the Kanyashree scholarship programme was created. 

This scholarship –  

• helps female students to continue their education for a long period of time
• encourages the delay of girl marriages 
• prevents child marriage in West Bengal by increasing the enrolment of girls in secondary education or vocational or sports training
• reduces dropouts, especially among girls from poor families, who are not covered by any other scholarship
• provides financial help to girls from disadvantaged families to pursue higher studies

Who are the target beneficiaries?

1. Approximately 3.5 lakh girls for one time grant each year in West Bengal
2. For the one-time grant, girls who are completing 18 years on or after 1st April 2021
3. Girls regularly attend institutions for education or vocational/sports training
4. Approximately 18 lakh female students for an annual scholarship each year
5. Girl children between the age of 13 to 19 years from families with annual incomes up to INR 1.2 lakh
6. Girls of Child Care Institutes registered under the J.J. Act between the age of 18-19 years

Kanyashree – 3 Types of Schemes

Through the Kanyashree Scholarship 2021 scheme, the Department of Women Development and Social Welfare is providing students with 3 government scholarship schemes namely – 

1. Annual Scholarship (K1)

Under this scheme, female students between the age of 13 and 17 years 11 months will be provided with a scholarship every year. This is a State Government initiative and a method to ensure that the girls remain unmarried and study in school until they reach the legal marriage age.

2. One-time Grant (K2)

Under this scheme, female students between the age of 18 and 19 will be provided with a one-time grant (financial funding).

3. Kanyashree Scholarship (K3)

Under this scholarship scheme, female students from both Arts and Science backgrounds can avail financial hevery monthasis.

Kanyashree – Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria are different for different types of Kanyashree scholarships. Students have to apply for the scholarships as per their age.

Annual scholarship (K1 Level)

1. The student applying for this scholarship must be a domicile of West Bengal.

2. She should be unmarried.

3. Students’ family income should be less than or equal to INR 1.2 lakh per year.

4. The student should be between 13 and 17 years of age.

5. The female student must not turn 18 as this would make her ineligible for yearly scholarship benefits, and she would only be able to get a one-time benefit.

6. The female student must be enrolled between class 8 to 12th standard in Government recognised regular or equivalent school or equivalent vocational or any other technical training courses.

7. The family income limit will be varied under the following situations:

• The student is already a recipient of the scholarship and will be applying for a renewal of the  benefit
• The student’s parents (both father & mother) are deceased.
• The student is physically handicapped.

One-Time Grant (K2 Level)

1. The student applying for this scholarship must be a domicile of West Bengal.

2. She should be unmarried upon attaining the age of 18.

3. Students’ family income should be less than or equal to INR 1.20 lakh per year.

4. The applicant female student should be enrolled and regularly attending an Institution of Higher Education or Training.

5. The female applicant’s family income criteria can be varied only under the following cases:

• The student’s parents (both father & mother) are deceased.
• The student is physically handicapped.

Kanyashree Scholarship (K3 Level)

1. Only the students registered for the K2 scheme would be eligible for the K3 scheme.
2. There is no maximum age limit to apply.
3. The student must have passed an undergraduate degree with at least 45% marks.
4. They must have secured admission to any postgraduate course at any University.

Kanyashree –  Rewards

Kanyashree scholarship rewards are distributed amongst female students as per the schemes:

Kanyashree – Application Procedure

Before eligible students can apply for the Kanyashree Prakalpa scheme, they need to open a bank account in their name. This process can be either done by the parents of the girl or the institution can also lend their assistance. 

To continue with the application process, students must follow the below steps:

For K1 and K2 Level Scholarship

1. Collect application forms from respective educational institutions

2. Enter the following details to get the scholarship

• Personal Details
• Address
• Educational Institution Address

3. After filling in the information, sign the application form and get it signed by parents. Apply along with documents (highlighted below) to the respective educational institution

5. Take it to the Head of the Department, who will verify the details furnished by the students and put an official stamp

6. Take the acknowledgement slip and keep the application number for future reference

7. After successful submission of the application form, the details will be uploaded on the official webpage of Kanyashree

For K3 Level

Step 1 – Registration 

1. Visit the official Kanyashree K3 Scholarship 2021 Application Portal (http://www.svmcm.wbhed.gov.in/) 

2. Click on Registration

3. Scroll down the page and tick the checkbox ‘This is to declare that I have read the instructions properly and I agree to abide by them.’

4. Click on the Proceed for Registration option.

5. A popup will appear requesting the minority students applying for fresh scholarships or renewal to apply in the following Portal.

6. Click on the Close button.

Step 2 – Add Details

1. Navigate to the option DIRECTORATE OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION (DPI) and click on Apply on Fresh Application
2. Select and fill in the following details:

Step 3 – Login

1. After successful registration, an Applicant ID will be generated
2. Click on the Login tab by visiting the website 
3. Enthe ter applicant ID and password
4. Click Submit

Step 4 – Add Details and Upload Photograph & Signature

1. After logging in, a dashboard will be opened
2. Click on Edit Profile/Application tab
3. Fill out the application form with basic details, qualifying exams, present course, address of the present institution
4. Upload scanned photograph and signature
5. Click on Save & Continue 

Step 5 – Add Bank Details

1. Submit bank details with the name of the Bank, IFSC Code, Branch Code, Account Number, and MICR Code.

Step 6 – Upload Documents

1. Interested students need to upload the scanned documents (highlighted below) to the online Application Portal
2. Documents must be uploaded in PDF Format

Step 7 – Application Submission

1. Click on Submit Application tab after uploading the required documents
2. Check the uploaded information before clicking on Finalize Application tab
3. After clicking the button, the female student cannot edit any info
4. Now applicants can check their Application Status on the Dashboard

Students who want to enrol themselves and apply for the Kanyashree scholarship must have access to the necessary certificates and documents before moving ahead to the application process.

How to Track Kanyashree Application Status?

To track the Scholarship Online Application Form, the student must follow the below steps:

1. Visit the official website of Kanyashree Prakalpa

2. Click on the Track Application option on the main page

3. Select the year and the type of scheme from the drop-down menu

4. Enter the Date of Birth, Application ID and the CAPTCHA image

5. Click on the Submit

6. The student will be able to see the Kanyashree Prakalpa application status.

Renewal of Kanyashree Prakalpa Scholarship 2022

In case a student wants to renew her scholarship, the process remains the same as that for new students. She must upload all the documents. However, there is no requirement for an income certificate for the Kanyashree Scheme application renewal.

Can Open/Distance University students apply for Kanyashree Scholarship?

No. Only the students pursuing regular courses from universities in West Bengal can apply for the Kanyashree scholarship programme.
