Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot on Wednesday said his government is committed for the welfare of students from SCs, OBCs, EBCs, DNTs and Divyangjans.
“Various ongoing scholarship schemes of the Government of India are for the welfare of the students from Scheduled Castes (SCs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs)/Economically Backward Classes (EBCs)/De-Notified & Nomadic Tribes (DNTs) and Divyangjans(PwDs),” Gehlot said.
While addressing the meeting of Consultative Committee of the ministry, Gehlot said, the objectives of these scholarships are to facilitate educational empowerment of students from these classes and to ensure their economic and social empowerment resulting from education.
“There is a substantial increase in the financial allocations and change in the eligibility criteria for these scholarships,” he added.
Various aspects of scholarships were presented by the concerned Joint Secretaries on the occasion.
To facilitate the educational empowerment of students belonging to Scheduled Castes, the Central Government has launched a number scholarships such as Post Matric Scholarships to the students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Pre-matric Scholarship for SC students studying in Class IX and X, Pre-matric Scholarship to the children of those engaged in occupations involving cleaning and prone to health hazards, National Fellowship Scheme to SC students for pursuing M.Phil and Ph.D, National Overseas Scholarship Scheme for SC candidates, Top Class Scholarship Scheme for SC Students, and Free Coaching Scheme for SC and OBC students.
To enable students of Other Backward Class with education, the government has launched a number of scholarships such as Pre-Matric Scholarships to OBCs, Post-Matric Scholarship for OBC Students, Dr Ambedkar Scheme of Post-Matric Scholarship for students belonging to Economically Backward Classes (EBCs), and Dr Ambedkar Scheme of Pre-Matric and Post Metric Scholarship for DNTs.
Likewise, the government has also launched a number of scholarship schemes for Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjans). Those scholarships include Pre-Matric scholarships, Post-Matric scholarships, Top Class Education, National Fellowship, National Overseas Scholarship, and Free Coaching.
