Top scholarships for students with disability

With the objective to empower differently-abled students, a number of schemes and scholarships have been launched by the Government of India. Not only this, various renowned universities, as well as NGOs and corporates through their CSR, have also turned up together in this collective effort to integrate differently-abled students to the mainstream society.

Here we have prepared a list of key schemes that are especially operating for the benefit of differently-abled students.

Scholarship for Top Class Education for Students with Disability

The scheme introduced by the Government of India with an objective to recognize and promote quality education among students with disability and allow them to pursue post-graduation courses.
Eligibility – Graduates with annual family Income < INR 6 Lac, enrolled in any full-time course at post graduate/diploma.
Benefits – Tuition fee, maintenance and special allowance

Pre-matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities

The scheme has been introduced by the Government of India with an objective to provide the opportunities for higher education to students having more than 40% disability.
Eligibility – Class 9 and 10 students with annual family Income < INR 2 Lac
Benefits – Stipend, book and additional allowances

Post Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities

This is yet another significant scholarship scheme introduced by the Government of India to serve the objective of supporting students with disabilities to study further in order to earn their livelihood and find a dignified place for themselves within the society.
Eligibility –Class 10 or 12 pass out students with annual family income < INR 2.5 Lac
Benefits – Maintenance, book and additional allowances, reimbursement of compulsory non-refundable fee

NHFDC Trust Fund Scholarship for Differently-Abled Students

Introduced by National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC), the scheme aims at enabling differently-abled students to pursue a technical or professional course from recognized institutes and get employed/self-employed.
Eligibility – Differently-abled/Physically challenged students, pursuing degree or post graduate level technical and professional courses from a recognized institution. Annual family income < INR 3 Lac
Benefits – Maintenance allowance (INR 2500-3000 pm), book/stationery allowance (INR 10000 per year), aid and appliances (if applicable)

16th CavinKare Ability Awards

Introduced by the CavinKare Pvt. Ltd. And Ability Foundation, the key objective of the awards is to reward achievers with disability who have achieved great heights by overcoming enormous hurdles, trials and tribulations and struggles in their lives.
Eligibility – Achievers with a disability
Benefits – Cash prize of up to INR 2 Lac, citation and trophy

Loan for Professional/Educational/Training Courses to Disabled Persons

It is a renowned education scheme introduced by National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation with an objective to grant a loan to disabled students to help them in paying their education costs and pursue higher education both within India or abroad.
Eligibility – Candidates with 40% or more disability pursuing Graduation courses / Post graduation courses / Professional courses, Other courses approved by UGC/Government/AICTE etc.
Benefits – Maximum INR 10.00 lacs for study in India and maximum INR 20.00 lacs for abroad studies. Rate of interest – 4% per annum. A rebate of 0.5% on interest to women beneficiaries.
Term loan covers college / school / hostel / examination / library / laboratory fees, purchase of books / equipment / instruments / uniforms, caution deposit / building fund / refundable deposit, travel expenses / passage money for studies abroad, purchase of computers considered necessary for completion of course, cost of a two-wheeler upto IR 50,000/, any other expenses required to complete the course like study tours, project work, Assistive devices etc.

Micro Financing Scheme

This is also an initiative by National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC), introduced with an objective to provide financial assistance to weaker sections of the disabled for augmenting or starting a business or activities that generate income.
Eligibility – Disabled candidates above 18 years of age. Preference will be given to women beneficiaries
Benefits – 100% of the project cost @ interest rate not more than 5%

Scheme for Parent’s Association of mentally retarded persons

An initiative by NHFDC, the objective of the scheme is to provide a loan to the parent’s association of mentally- retarded persons to allow them set-up an activity that generates income for the benefit of mentally-retarded persons.
Eligibility – Parents association registered for at least 3 years with minimum 5 members
Benefit – Loan of up to INR 5 Lac @ interest rate 5-6%
Procedure:  The loan application under the scheme will be submitted directly by the Parents Association.

Scheme of Financing NGOs Working in the Area of Disabilities

The scheme aims at providing financial assistance to NGOs working in the area of disability into the form of a loan to make them a social entrepreneur by allowing them set-up/expand an income generating activity for the benefit for disabled persons.
Eligibility – NGOs registered for at least 3 years and serving the social and economic needs of persons with disabilities.
Benefits – Loan of up to INR 5 Lac @ interest rate of 5 -8%

Scheme for financial assistance for skill & entrepreneurial development

The scheme is offered by NHFDC with an objective to provide training to disabled persons and make them self-dependent and capable through proper technical training in tradition and technical entrepreneurship and occupations.
Eligibility – Candidates between 15 and 50 years of age
Benefits – 100% of the total recurring cost of the programme and stipend of INR 500 per week.

Scheme of Financing Construction of Commercial/Business Premises for Starting Self Employment Activity to PwDs

This is yet another crucial scheme of NHFDC to assist the disabled persons with a composite concessional loan for construction of commercial/business premises and initiating self-employment activity.
Eligibility – Persons with disability owning land for commercial/business premises
Benefits – Loan up to INR 3 Lac

Scheme for Providing Handholding Support to Disabled Entrepreneurs through ‘Vishesh Udyami Mitras’

Introduced by NHFDC, the scheme aims at providing assistance to disabled persons in the form of support, information and guidance for documentation/procedural formalities required for availing concessional credit NHFDC schemes through SCAs/RRBs.
Eligibility – Vishesh Udyami Mitras
Benefits – Loan of up to INR 5 Lac

Scheme for Providing handholding support to Disabled for availing training/skill through ‘Vishesh Prashikshan Mitras’

This is yet another initiative by NHFDC to provide assistance to disabled persons in the form of guidance, information and support for documentation/procedural formalities required for getting admission to avail vocational/skill training under NHFDC schemes through SCAs/Banks.
Eligibility – Vishesh Prashikshan Mitras
Benefits – INR 1000 per trainee

Scheme of Financing Assistive Devices to Enhance the Employability or Increased Opportunity of Self Employment for Persons with Disability

NHFDC also offers financial assistance for the purchase of assistive devices like a motorized tricycle, screen reader, hearing aid etc. to disabled persons. The scheme aims at assisting these candidates with a concessional loan for acquiring reliable, durable and scientifically manufactured appliances and aids that can enhance their prospects of employability or self-employment.
Eligibility – Disabled candidates above 18 years of age
Benefits – Loan of up to INR 5 Lac

Scheme for Young Professionals

NHFDC has introduced this scheme, especially for professionally educated unemployed disabled youth. The key objective of the scheme is to inculcate self-confidence among them through self-employment and utilize their experience and wisdom gained through education and professional training.
Eligibility – Disabled candidates between 18 and 45 years of age, should have a professional degree from recognized institute. Illustrative list: Doctor; Architect; Engineer including Software / Hardware / Automobile; Advocate ; Chartered Accountant/ Cost Accountant; Hotel Management, Geriatric Home Care; Publicity & Advertisement; Service & Maintenance of Building : Security Guard Agency; Coaching Centres for Competitive Examination , Culture and Tourism Development ; Printing Press/DTP/Graphics etc.; Fashion Designing / Boutiques; Textile Designing; Ornamental / Sculpture; Value addition in traditional Art & Craft etc.
Benefits – Loan of up to INR 25 Lac @ interest rate of 4-8%.
