Rahul was also selected as a recipient of Marubeni India Meritorious Scholarship. We talked to Rahul and asked him some questions about his journey so far. Below are the excerpts from the same:

Buddy4Study: Tell us a little about your academic and professional journey.

Rahul: I’m from Uttar Pradesh but we have been living in Haryana (Karnal) since 2002. We have no agricultural land so my parents used to work in other people’s farms. We moved to Haryana because of a lengthy drought and a lack of employment opportunities. I passed Class 10th and 12th from Haryana Board and grabbed the first position.

Then I took admission in B.Com. During graduation, I got the first position in the 1st and 2nd semesters. I performed well in other semesters too. I’m the first person in my family to pursue graduation. I have also won many district and state level quiz competitions.

Buddy4Study: Why did you choose to pursue B.Com.?

Rahul: My parents are uneducated, so they could not offer me any guidance. But from the beginning itself, I wanted to choose a course that could help me get a job. It was my Accounts teacher, Mr. Jasmer, who motivated me for B.Com. He suggested that it is the best course for a Commerce student. He wanted me to pursue my higher education in Delhi. But my financial situation prevented me from taking admission even though I was shortlisted.

Career Assessment Test

Buddy4Study: What were the major challenges that you faced during the course of your journey?

Rahul: After school, I worked for 15 days to pay for my college admission. Money was always a problem when it came to buying books and stationery. I couldn’t join a tuition because of the lack of money.

But after getting the Marubeni Scholarship, I’ve been able to continue my studies very well. Not just me, the scholarship has also helped my sister in pursuing education.

Buddy4Study: Who is your source of inspiration?

Rahul: My mother is the source of my inspiration. She is uneducated but she has worked very hard to educate us. She has faced many problems in her life but she doesn’t want her children to face any problems. She always motivates me.

Buddy4Study - Education Loan

Buddy4Study: How has your family supported you in pursuing education?

Rahul: My father is a construction worker. We don’t have any regular source of income. It is very difficult for us to meet the household expenses. Sometimes, I had to work in order to pay for my educational expenses. Initially, my father wanted me to leave studies. But my mother always supported me for pursuing education. Marubeni Scholarship has helped me a lot in my venture to pursue education.

Buddy4Study: How did you come to know about the Marubeni India Meritorious Scholarship? What steps did you follow to avail the scholarship?

Rahul: I came to know about the Marubeni Scholarship through a newspaper. I applied for the scholarship through Buddy4Study and was shortlisted for the telephonic interview. After clearing the telephonic round, I appeared for a face-to-face interview and was selected for the scholarship. I have been selected twice for Marubeni India Meritorious Scholarship, in 2016 and 2017.

Buddy4Study: What are your ambitions in the future and how do you plan to execute them?

Rahul: I want to become a Civil Servant as I want to serve my nation. I want to connect the poor section of the society to the mainstream. The Civil Services provide us a big platform from where we can do a lot for the people of our country.

Buddy4Study: What would you like to say to other aspirants like you who face challenges while pursuing higher education?

Rahul: I just want to say that if we have to do something in life then we have to work hard. There is no substitute for hard work. We have to make ourselves capable so that we can be role models for children around us.

I would like to thank Buddy4Study for helping me in getting the scholarship.
