Scholar Success Story – Madhumita Jana: A L’Oréal India Scholar

Buddy4Study: Share with us something about your academic background and professional journey till present.

Madhumita: I am Madhumita Jana, an FYWIS scholar. I am currently pursuing M.Sc. (Tech.) in Applied Geophysics from IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. I have completed my class 10th examination from West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) with 91% marks and class 12th examination from West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) with 92.4% marks. In my school life, I appeared for many district level talent examinations in subjects like Math, Science and Geography. Also, I used to do painting and recitation at that time. I completed my graduation in Physics with 76.9% marks from Lady Brabourne College, University of Calcutta. During my college life, I attended various research-oriented programs at S.N. BOSE INSTITUTE and SAHA INSTITUTE OF NUCLEAR PHYSICS. I have also attended the research program of INSA (Indian National Science Academy). After the final year of graduation, I was selected as a member of 15-days summer school program held at S.N. BOSE INSTITUTE. Presently, I am also trying to do project and academic internship to further improve myself.

Buddy4Study: What motivated you to pursue a course in Geophysics?

Madhumita: First of all, Geophysics is an explorative subject and I want to explore more about our mother earth. Secondly, it is application-based learning that I like the most. Both these reasons motivated me to choose this subject.

Buddy4Study: What were the challenges that you came across during this journey?

Madhumita: Since I belong to a poor family, pursuing higher studies became expensive but my dream was big. It was actually a challenge for me to overcome this financial barrier and achieve my goals.

Buddy4Study: Who has been your source of inspiration?

Madhumita: The speech of my teachers and the biography of some great people inspired me to proceed towards my goal.

Buddy4Study: How has your family supported you in this journey?

Madhumita: My family is very supportive. They always guide me to become an established person in society by achieving my dream.

Buddy4Study: How did you come to know about the L’Oréal Scholarship? What were the steps involved to avail the scholarship?

Madhumita: I came to know about L’Oréal scholarship from my school teacher Raghunath Jana. I had to complete three steps to avail this scholarship. At first, I submitted an essay along with the scholarship application, after which I was called for a telephonic interview. After passing this interview, I was called for the final face-to-face interview.

Buddy4Study: What are your future plans? How will you execute those plans?

Madhumita: In future, I want to do research on remote sensing and explore the inner side of our mother earth. Besides this, I also want to spend a healthy social life by taking active participation in social work. I want to help the poor students in achieving their goals. To execute all my plans, I have to study more and more so that I can achieve my goals first and then I will take the responsibility of society.

Buddy4Study: What would be your advice to other potential aspirants?

Madhumita: My only piece of advice for all the potential aspirants is that if you truly dream for something, nothing can stop you from achieving it.
