The NMMSS scholarships are given to deserving children from economically disadvantaged areas to prevent them from dropping out of school in Class 8 and to encourage them to continue their studies at secondary and senior secondary levels.
According to official sources, “One lakh new scholarships are offered to selected students from Class 9 each year and their continuation/renewal in Classes 9 to 12 for students studying in State Government, Government-aided, and local body schools.”
The scholarship amount is Rs. 12,000, which is given annually.

NMMSS 2022 – Eligibility Criteria
- Students who wish to apply for the NMMSS scholarship must be regularly studying in Class 9 at the time of application.
- They must have scored a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grades in their Class 8.
- Applicants should be pursuing education from any government/local body or government-aided schools at the time of application.
- Candidates seeking continuation or renewal of the scholarship after Class 9 must score a minimum of 60% marks in their Class 10 examination and must have been promoted from Class 9 to 10 in their first attempt.
- Candidates seeking continuation or renewal of the scholarship in Class 12 must score a minimum of 60% marks in their Class 10 examination and must have been promoted from Class 11 to 12 in their first attempt.
- Students’ annual family income should not be more than Rs. 3.5 lakh.
- Candidates who are enrolled in Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Sainik schools, and private schools are not eligible for the NMMSS scholarship.
Note: Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories will be given a relaxation of 5% marks.
NMMSS 2022 – Application Details
- First and foremost, students need to register on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) as fresh applicants.
- Students applying for the scholarship must have certain information beforehand, including educational qualifications, Aadhaar card number, school enrolment number, and bank details.
- Candidates will receive an application ID after registering on the NSP website.
- This application ID will be used as a ‘Login ID’ on the portal.
- Students studying in Class 9 or Class 10 are required to apply under the Pre-Matric scholarship category.
- Students studying in Class 11 or Class 12 are required to apply under the Post-Matric scholarship category.
