With an objective to boost India’s relation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in terms of education, the country will offer 1,000 scholarships at Indian Institutes of Technology to PhD students from the ASEAN countries.
“To further empower our youth in our region, I have the pleasure to announce 1,000 Fellowships to students and researchers from ASEAN countries for studying integrated PhD programmes in IITs, India’s premier institutions of imparting knowledge,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, adding, “An important focus of our commemorative events celebrates the power of our youth, our future.”
Speaking at the Commemorative Summit to mark 25 years of ASEAN-India Partnership, PM Modi said India would also like to offer dedicated training courses at the Indian Academy of Highway Engineers for ASEAN Highway Professionals.
“We would also like to offer dedicated training courses at the Indian Academy of Highway Engineers for ASEAN Highway Professionals,” he said, adding, “I also propose that we set up a network of Universities to encourage greater inter-university exchanges.”

Saying that India’s friendship with ASEAN countries has been nurtured by shared cultural and civilizational linkages, he said Ramayana continues to be a valuable shared legacy in ASEAN and the Indian subcontinent.
“Our friendship has been nurtured by our shared cultural and civilizational linkages,” Modi said, adding, “The Ramayana, the ancient Indian epic, continues to be a valuable shared legacy in ASEAN and the Indian subcontinent.”
“We have also jointly released a set of commemorative stamps to celebrate our common heritage,” he added further.
Highlighting that India’s partnership has evolved from sectoral dialogue to strategic partnership, Modi said the country has made excellent progress in implementing the objectives of the ASEAN-India Partnership for Peace, Progress and Shared Prosperity, through five-year plans of action.
“Since 1992, our partnership has evolved from sectoral dialogue to strategic partnership and we have today thirty sectoral dialogue mechanisms and seven ministerial level interactions, in addition to annual Summit meetings,” he said, adding “We have made excellent progress in implementing the objectives of the ASEAN-India Partnership for Peace, Progress and Shared Prosperity, through five year plans of action.”
