The role of Information Technology is all-pervading in today’s world. We live in the information age, after all. From the latest smartphone technology to the most advanced industrial computers, Computer Engineers and IT Professionals are behind some of the most drastic changes in how humans live their lives we’ve witnessed in the past couple of decades.

Unsurprisingly, Indians too have been attracted in droves to make IT their top career aspiration. Indian IT professionals have a ubiquitous presence in the top companies of the world. In fact, computer engineers today hold the same social status in India as civil servants did in the era pre-liberalization.

The rise of IT in India can also be attributed to the world class institutions offering courses in IT & computers in the country. Today, we will look at the top institutions in India for students to study Information Technology and Computers:

Indian Institutes of Technology – No surprises that at the top of the list stand the venerable IITs of India. These autonomous public institutes of higher learning have been accorded the status of ‘Institutions of National Importance’. The IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kanpur and Madras rank well above any other institution, while those at Roorkee, Guwahati and Varanasi are also quite prestigious.

National Institutes of Technology – Set up in 2007 under the National Institutes of Technology Act, the NITs are an attempt to emulate the success of IITs and have also been given the status of “Institutions of National Importance” alongside the IITs. Of the 31 NITs, the 4-Yr B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering programs offered at NIT Tiruchirappalli, NIT Surathkal, and NIT Warangal are the most prestigious. Admissions are granted through the candidate’s performance in JEE Mains.
