The first IIT was set up in 1951 (Kharagpur) while 7 more were added to the list in 2015-16. Admissions to IITs 4-Yr B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering is very competitive and is done through the JEE-Advanced. The IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kanpur and Madras rank well above any other institution, while those at Roorkee, Guwahati and Varanasi are also quite prestigious.
BITS, Pilani – Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani was established in 1964. It is a private institution with a deemed university status, and highly regarded as one of the best colleges to study IT and Computer Science after the IITs. Admissions to their 4-Yr B.E.(Hons.) in Computer Science Engineering program is through BITSAT (BITS Admission Test), an all-India computerised competitive entrance examination. BITS has established centres at Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai.
Delhi Technological University – Formerly known as Delhi College of Engineering, the DTU is an engineering university in New Delhi and one of the oldest engineering colleges in India, as well as the first in Delhi. The Institution offers a 4-Yr B.Tech program in computer engineering. Admission towards the course is through JEE Mains and the Joint Admission Counselling Delhi (JAC-Delhi) process.
National Institutes of Technology – Set up in 2007 under the National Institutes of Technology Act, the NITs are an attempt to emulate the success of IITs and have also been given the status of “Institutions of National Importance” alongside the IITs. Of the 31 NITs, the 4-Yr B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering programs offered at NIT Tiruchirappalli, NIT Surathkal, and NIT Warangal are the most prestigious. Admissions are granted through the candidate’s performance in JEE Mains.
VIT University, Vellore – Vellore Institute of Technology is a private deemed university founded in 1984. A prestigious university for the study of Information Technology, it was among the top 300 universities in Asia, according to QS rankings. The university offers a 4-Yr B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering. Admissions are granted on the basis of merit through its own engineering entrance exam, called the Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE).
