Study in Switzerland: All you need to know

One of the most exotic locations in the world, Switzerland is quite often on the top of the list for places to visit by tourists. Known for its peaceful policies and high happiness index, Switzerland is also famous among students across the world for its prestigious educational institutions.

So, if you wish to acquire further education in Switzerland, you need to keep some crucial points in mind before making any decisions. Have a look at some of those points given below.

Top colleges/universities to look out for in Switzerland

Dotted with Alpine mountains and stunning lakes, Switzerland houses some world-renowned universities and institutions such as University of Zurich, ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, University of Geneva, University of Basel and University of Bern, which offer courses in disciplines like Engineering and Technology, Natural Sciences, Medicine, Physiology and Research. It also has CERN which is the world’s largest particle physics laboratory and a European Organisation for Nuclear Research, situated here.

Scholarship opportunities

If you are worried about the cost of education in Switzerland, there’s solution for that too. Scholarships such as IMD MBA Scholarships, University of Geneva Scholarships, Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships and ETH Excellence Scholarships are provided by the universities or Swiss government to ease students’ financial burden.

Application procedure

To apply for a Swiss educational institution, you will have to make contact with your desired institution and apply directly to them since there is no provision for centralised application procedure. But before applying, check the preferred language for teaching used in the institution as Switzerland has for official language – German, French, Italian and Rumantsch, though English is widely and extensively used there. So, make sure that the course you are applying for is taught in English or the language you prefer or have knowledge of.

Employment opportunities

Though the cost of education in Switzerland is affordable for international students, the cost of living is not that much. So, to bear the extra expenses incurred while studying there, students prefer part-time job while studying. Swiss government allows foreign students to work for at least 15 hours per week.

Cost of living

Since it is widely known that the cost of living in Switzerland is expensive, students are advised to look for subsidised on-campus housing facilities available for students. Rented flats on sharing basis can also cut your living expense to a great extent. Early booking of accommodation also helps in keeping your expenses lower.

Visa procedure

To enter Switzerland, international students need to apply for visa at the Swiss Embassy or Consulate of their country. All you need to make sure is that all your documents are in the right order. Once approved, you can proceed to join the university/institution you have been accepted into without any difficulty.
