Research Fellowship at the Centre for Internet & Society 2018 invites applications from postgraduates and undergraduate degree holders with research experience to undertake field studies of platform-work. This fellowship project aims to produce a comparative understanding of at least two different kinds of platform-work (digitally-mediated service work).

    Eligibility
    • The applicants may hold a postgraduate degree (or currently pursuing PG degree) in social sciences, journalism, or legal studies. 
    • The applicants having an undergraduate degree with research experience are also eligible to apply.
    • The applicant must be based in the city where the field study will be undertaken, at least for the duration of the research work.
    • The applicant must be fluent in the English language (especially, written) and the main regional languages spoken in the city where the research work will take place.
    • The candidates with prior research and writing experience in the area of labour and work, digital or otherwise will be preferred.

     

    Benefits
    • Each of the selected research fellows will receive an amount of INR 1,50,000 (inclusive of taxes) in three equal installments. 
    • The first installment will be given on signing the agreement in December.
    • The second installment will be given on completion of the fieldwork in March.
    • The third installment will be paid on submission of complete draft ethnographic report by the end of May.
    Documents
    • An updated CV of the applicant having relevant academic and professional information.
    • Two samples of academic/professional (published/unpublished) writing by the applicant
    • A brief research proposal of about 500 words that must specify the city of study selected by the applicant and the sector (either delivery services or taxi services) where the applicant will study the platform-work

Important Dates

Selection of research fellows: Last week of November 2018
Start of the fellowship: 1 December 2018
Initial research workshop: Mid-December 2018 (in Bengaluru)
Start of field-study by the fellows: January-March 2019
Preparation of draft ethnographic reports by Research Fellows: April-May 2019
Submission of reports: 31 May 2019
Final research workshop: June 2019

  • The selected research fellow will have to work part-time from the month of December 2018 to May 2019, i.e., for a period of 6 months.
  • The fellows will have to undertake field-study of platform-work and platform-workers involved in a specific app-based logistical (like delivery services) or transportation (like taxi services) sector.
  • The research work of the fellows will be based on the following questions:
    • How are gig economy platforms impacting the labour market in India? Is platform-work driving new patterns of migration across geographies (including rural to urban) and industries? What skills are being demanded of platform-workers, and how are they acquiring such skills and entering this job market?
    • What legal, social, economic, and technological challenges are being faced by platform-workers, and what structural barriers (say, digital divide) are shaping the ability of platform-workers to articulate and access labour rights in these industries?
    • How are existing forms and practices of labour management and self-organisation (including formal unions) are being recast in the context of platform-work?
