Heinrich Böll Foundation, The Green Political Foundation invites applications for Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarships for Doctoral Students 2020. It is aimed to award the scholarships to German and foreign PhD students in accordance with the guidelines issued by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Foreign office. Selected scholars will receive a basic scholarship of up to EUR 1350 per month, EUR 100 per month as research costs allowance, various individual allowances and additional funding benefits.

DeadlineClosed Eligibility To be eligible, an applicant must:
- Have proof of admission to doctoral studies by a state or state-recognized university, as a rule in Germany
- Have completed preliminary work
Benefits - A basic scholarship of up to EUR 1350 per month.
- EUR 100 per month as research costs allowance.
- Various individual allowances and additional funding benefits.
Documents - CV
- Copy of degree certificate or equivalent
- Certification by the university of admission to doctoral studies or equivalent documentation
- Proof of German language proficiency - for foreign applicants
- Detailed exposé of the research project (max. 10 pages)
- A third-party reference on social commitment (1–2 pages)
- Two expert references from university lecturers
- Resident permit document – for refugees
How can you apply? Follow the steps below to apply for the scholarship:
Step 1: Register for the online application portal.
Step 2: Provide the requested information.
Step 3: Upload all the documents and submit the application.
Important Dates
- Application deadline: 01st March 2020
- Interview with liaison lecturer: Generally by mid-May
- Selection workshops: June/July
- Notification of scholarship award: July
- Probable commencement of scholarship payments: 01st October 2020
Note: The application will be opened about 6 weeks before the closing date.
Selection Criteria
Selection of the scholarship applicants involves three stages –
- Submission of written application documents.
- An interview with a liaison lecturer (telephone interviews may also be held).
- Attendance at a selection workshop in Berlin consisting of a one-to-one interview and a group discussion.

Terms and Conditions
- References sent to the Heinrich Böll Foundation by the referees directly should reach the foundation by the respective application deadline.
- Personal and expert references by university lecturers must contain the referee’s original signature. This does not apply in case the referee sends the document directly to the Heinrich Böll Foundation by e-mail.
- All documents have to be provided in German (however, the foundation also accept personal reference, expert references and exposé in English).
