KSCSTE Kerala Back To Lab Post Doctoral Fellowship Programme 2024-25 is an opportunity offered by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) to women who hold a Ph.D. degree in Science or Engineering and are permanently residing in Kerala. The program aims to support females who have taken breaks in their profession by offering post-doctoral fellowships and facilitating their re-entry into scientific research. The fellowship offers a monthly fellowship of ₹45,000 for two years and an annual contingent grant of ₹75,000, along with HRA for candidates living in rented accommodation during the project.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, an applicant must:-

    • be a female scientist permanently residing in Kerala
    • be aged under 40 years as of 1st February 2023
    • be a qualified Ph.D. degree holder in Science or Engineering as of the date of the application
    • have scored a minimum of 60% marks in postgraduation studies
    • be on a career break at the time of application because of obligations to family or other relevant issues
    • should not be receiving emoluments from any other sources
    • have at least one research paper published in SCI Journal/secured patent

     

    Note:-

    • The age limit can be relaxed by 3 years for OBC and 5 years for SC/ST applicants.
    • Applicants must not avail of a post-doctoral fellowship from KSCSTE or anywhere before.
    • Applicants should not be employed either on a permanent or temporary basis.
    • Applicants should choose an institution as a research center different from their Ph.D. research center.
    • Applicants should choose tenable institutions like R&D (national/state level) and University Departments in Kerala should belong to the category of Government Institutions.
    • Premier National Institutions viz., IISER, IIT, IISc. etc. outside the state will be considered under tenable institutions.
    Benefits

    The selected candidates will receive the following benefits:-

    • A monthly fellowship of ₹45,000 for a maximum of two years
    • An annual contingent grant of ₹75,000 for the duration of the project
    • House Rent Allowance (HRA) will be provided to those who are availing rented accommodation

     

    Note:-

    • The HRA will be reimbursed at the capped rate of up to a 10% maximum by the host institution, upon submission of a valid HRA certificate in the specified format.
    • Those residing in their own house, institute accommodation, or any government housing facility are not eligible for HRA.
    • At the end of the project period, any unutilised portion of the grant including accrued interest should be refunded to the council by demand draft (DD) to the Member Secretary, KSCSTE.

    • Endorsement from the head of the institution
    • Biodata the applicant including the list of publications (not more than 2 pages)
    • Biodata of scientist mentor (not more than 2 pages)
    • Date of Birth proof (Note:- Applicants seeking age relaxation due to reservation category should submit a combined document as proof.)

    Note:- The declaration, consent, endorsement, and break in career certificate must be submitted in the specified formats provided by KSCSTE.

    Following documents are required to be submitted at the time of project completion:-

    • 3 hard copies of the Final Technical Report (FTR) 
    • Original Statement of Expenditure and Utilisation Certificate (2nd year and consolidated)
    • One hard copy of the project completion report 
    • List of publications

    How can you apply?

    Eligible candidates can apply for the fellowship by following the below steps:-
    Step 1: Click on the 'Apply Now' button.
    Step 2: Click the 'Register' button and fill in the required registration details. (Note:- If already registered log in using Gmail/Mobile number/Email ID.)
    Step 3: Click on ‘Register New Account’ and enter the required details along with a captcha. (Note:- If already registered, fill in the credentials and click on ‘Login’.)
    Step 4: Click on ‘Register’ to get OTP by email and SMS.
    Step 5: Use the registered email address as the username and the OTP as the password. (Note:- Applicants can change the password after logging in.)
    Step 6: Once logged in, click on ‘Online Submission’, then select ‘Post Doctoral Fellowship’.
    Step 7: Accept the terms and click on ‘Go’.
    Step 8: Fill in all the required information, upload the necessary documents and submit the application.

Selection Criteria

The candidates for this fellowship will be chosen based purely on merit and a thorough selection process, consisting of the following stages:

  • Preliminary scrutiny for eligibility verification
  • Technical review by five subject experts
  • Presentation of project proposal to the Research Advisory Committee (RAC)
  • Meeting and recommendation by RAC
  • Execution of agreement and submission of HRA certificate
  • Issue of sanction order and release of first instalment

Terms and Conditions
  • Selection is made exclusively based on merit. Any kind of canvassing will result in disqualification.
  • Applicants can save their application in progress, return to it later, verify its accuracy, and finally submit it. Once submitted, however, no further changes can be made.
  • The candidate should begin the project within two weeks and no later than one month after receiving the sanction order or the first instalment of the funds.
  • Upon joining the research centre, the candidate must inform KSCSTE of the project's official start date.
  • Candidates are required to submit annual progress reports to KSCSTE on a project-year basis.
  • The post-doctoral fellow is required to submit a thorough Final Technical Report (FTR) detailing the research they conducted during their fellowship, upon its completion. The project implemented by the researcher should produce qualitative results, i.e. publications in high-impact journals, patents, social relevance/impact, scope of commercialisation etc.
  • Post-doctoral fellows are required to participate in frequent group monitoring workshops to present their work progress. The workshop will examine project progress and consider any technical, financial, or duration-related requests for appropriate decisions by the Council.
  • After completing their fellowship, post-doctoral fellows will have to submit consolidated audited statements of expenditure and utilisation certificates to KSCSTE within 3 months after project completion.
  • Fellows will be assigned a scientist mentor with significant research experience of 5 or more years to supervise their research work. The mentor will project progress, ensure seamless implementation, and facilitate the timely submission of financial utilisation reports by the institute to KSCSTE.
  • The implementing Institute should provide adequate infrastructure, including laboratories, computers, libraries, communication, accommodation, water, and energy to ensure smooth implementation of the project.
  • When publishing technical or scientific papers based on project research, fellows are required to acknowledge KSCSTE's support.
  • The fellow should not enter a collaboration with a foreign party without approval from the council.
  • KSCSTE has the right to end the programme at any moment if it is determined that the project is not being implemented with sufficient progress.
  • The researcher is required to submit the financial records and annual progress report of the first project year after it’s over. The RAC will evaluate the first year's work progress before the release of the second grant instalment.
  • Extension of the project is allowed under genuine circumstances. Requests for extension must be sent to the director of KSCSTE two months before the initial scheduled date of completion.
  • The post-doctoral fellow shall publish the results of the project work in at least one peer-reviewed journal before completion of the project tenure of two years. When the grant is settled, KSCSTE will release the fellowship for the final three months of the second year and the funding for contingencies, following the submission of a copy of the publication or an announcement of the paper's approval.
  • The post-doctoral fellow should inform KSCSTE about any achievement, patent submission/publication of any research outcome achieved by the project during or after the project tenure. All publications, patents, and news coverage from the research must acknowledge KSCSTE's support.
  • If research findings are to be legally protected, they must be secured before publication.
