About The Program

The NIF Translation Fellowship 2025 is offered by the New India Foundation. This prestigious fellowship supports outstanding translators and scholars in rendering high-quality non-fiction works written in Indian languages into English. Selected fellows will receive the fellowship award of ₹6,00,000 for the period of 6 months.

To be eligible, an applicant must:-

  • be an Indian citizen or a Person of Indian Origin (PIO)
  • demonstrate fluency in both English and the chosen Indian language
  • have proposed a translation of a significant non-fiction work originally written in an Indian language
  • show evidence of prior translation work, research, or relevant academic/professional background
Benefits

The selected student will receive a fellowship amount of ₹6,00,000, which will be distributed evenly over a period of 6 months.

Selection Criteria

The candidates will be selected based on the following criteria - 

  • Applications will be invited through select advertising by the NIF in leading journals and online platforms.
  • The NIF Trustees shall assess the proposals and prepare a shortlist of eligible candidates. 
  • The shortlisted candidates will be subject to a thorough interview process with a jury consisting of the NIF Trustees as well as other eminent persons from the worlds of scholarship, business and social service. 
Terms and Conditions
  • Fellowship is for a duration of 6 months.
  • The fellowship is non-renewable.
  • Recipients must commit full-time to the translation project during the tenure.
