To be eligible, an applicant must:-
- be a student studying in one of the following at an Indian institution:
- the second year of a 3-year undergraduate program OR
- the second/third year of a 4-year undergraduate program OR
- a first year of a 2-year master's program OR
- the second/third/fourth year of a 5-year integrated program
- Accepted to work in a lab with a professor/principal investigator who has at least three years of faculty experience and three publications as the corresponding author in peer-reviewed journals at any Indian institute outside their own.
- be interested in undertaking a life science-associated internship for a period of two (minimum of 56 days) or three (minimum of 84 days) months
Note:- Students receiving financial assistance from the principal investigator and/or any other agencies (KVPY, INSA, JNCASR, IIT, IISER) are eligible to apply. However, they cannot get additional support from the program.
Benefits
The selected interns will receive a stipend amount of ₹6,000 per month for on-site internships and ₹3,000 for remote internships for a period of up to 3 months upon satisfying the following requirements:
- To receive the first month’s stipend, applicants have to get the internship joining letter filled out by the hosting Principal Investigator (PI) and send the scanned version to the Next Gen Scientists Foundation (NGSF).
- To receive the second month’s stipend, interns are required to send an article for the NGS blog under the specified guidelines before the first week of the second month of the Internship. Also, the interns are required to fill out the Internship continuation letter.
- Interns are required to submit the following:
- work progress report for the Internship period within the last week of the second/third month
- feedback form at the end of the internship
- research work at the end of the internship period in the NGS Interns webinar to receive an internship completion certificate and travel reimbursements
Additionally, on-site interns will receive a reimbursement for their travel expenses, up to the amount it costs to buy a round-trip third-class air-conditioned (III AC) train ticket.

Selection Criteria
Candidates will be selected based on merit and fulfilment of the eligibility criteria for an interview via Skype. Final selection will be done thereafter.
Note:- Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Hence, early applications are encouraged.

- The internship can span any two to three-month period between May and July as per the convenience of the student and the principal investigator (PI).
- Next Gen Scientists Foundation (NGSF) do not provide internship opportunities directly. The program only funds students accepted by the principal investigator (PI) to work in their labs. A list of the recommended institutes is given on the NGSF website.
- Funds from the program are meant to support interns in traditional unpaid internships without fees.
- The research proposal carries significant weight in the evaluation process. Emphasis will be given to creativity, understanding of the field, presentation of content, and vision.
- All proposals will be checked for plagiarism and any evidence of plagiarised text will result in immediate disqualification of the applicant.
