MSIF McDonald Fellowship 2024 is an opportunity offered by the MSIF (Multiple Sclerosis International Federation)* to students pursuing M.Sc., Ph.D., and M.D. level studies in the field of multiple sclerosis. The fellowship enables early-career researchers in multiple sclerosis from low-income countries to work in a research institution outside their own country. Selected candidates will receive up to £30,000 (approximately ₹31,59,124.33) for 2 years and an additional grant of £2,000 (approximately ₹2,10,496.60) per year is provided to the host institution.

*The Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) is a global organisation that brings together multiple sclerosis (MS) organisations, researchers, healthcare professionals and individuals affected by MS.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, an applicant must:-

    • be a citizen of a low- or middle-income country (including India)
    • be pursuing postgraduate studies, at least an M.Sc., preferably a Ph.D. or M.D. degree in an area relevant to multiple sclerosis
    • be working or studying in another country on a project supported by a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) International Federal grant that started within six months before the nomination
    • have focused their research on areas relevant to multiple sclerosis

    Note:- Recipients of a Du Pré grant can subsequently apply for a McDonald Fellowship, but not the other way around.

    Benefits

    The fellowship offers a two-year grant of around £30,000 (approximately ₹31,56,834.00) per year to cover travel and living costs. An additional contribution of £2,000 (approximately ₹2,10,496.60) per year is provided to the host institution. The fellowship expects part of this contribution in the second year to be used to cover the candidate's expenses to attend the annual congress of the European Committee for Treatment and Research (ECTRIMS) in MS.

    How can you apply?

    Eligible candidates can apply for the position using the steps listed below-
    Step 1:

MSIF’s McDonald Fellowship panel, comprised of both scientists and people affected by MS will consider and select successful candidates.

  • The fellowship can be used as a supplement for work related to MS by a candidate who has been accepted for training in a recognised institute within six months before nomination but who doesn’t have enough money to cover the total cost.
  • Projects are only accepted if the risk of travel is low.
  • The project will then be carried out safely with minimal risk to the applicant.
  • There are sufficient resources and supervision to allow the proposed project to take place, and the project demonstrates sufficient value to the applicant.
  • Application forms will be revised to include a question asking the applicant to write a plan for how to conduct the work or a part of the work if unable to travel.
  • The McDonald Fellowships are conditional on commencing no later than the end of 2024. This is a joint application from the applicant and host. Before nomination, candidates need to have identified a suitable project and host supervisor at an institution outside their own country.
  • A project host must be agreed upon before commencing the application. Candidates and Host supervisors are required to read and sign the Terms and Conditions of the award.
