About the Program


The Ministry of Education, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan invites applications for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships for Research Students 2020 from Master's and PhD degree applicants. This scholarship is an initiative by Japan to invite students internationally and provide them with the opportunity to conduct research in Japan. The selected scholars have the opportunity to receive a monthly allowance of up to JPY 145,000, full tuition fee waiver and other benefits.

    To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicants must fulfil the following: 

    • Master's degree applicants should hold a Bachelor's degree in the relevant field with a minimum of 65% marks
    • PhD degree applicants should hold a Master's degree in the relevant field with a minimum of 65% marks
    • PhD applicants should have practical research/teaching/work experience
    • Applicants must be under the age of 35 years
    • Candidates applying for courses in Japanese should have a relevant qualifying degree in Japanese. Alternatively, they can possess N2 certificate of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) conducted by the Japan Foundation.

    The selected scholars will receive the following benefits: 

    • A monthly allowance of up to JPY 145,000
    • A supplemental regional allowance of up to JPY 3000 in addition to the monthly scholarship amount
    • Full tuition fee waiver 
    • Travelling expenses 
    • Transportation to and fro Japan

    The following documents are required to be attached along with the application: 

    • Field of study and research plan
    • Academic transcript for all academic year of University attended 
    • Certificate of UG degree
    • Letter of recommendation from the dean/ president or the academic advisor at the current or last university attended
    • Medical certificate
    • Abstract of thesis 
    • Certificate of language proficiency
    • LOR from the present employer

    How can you apply?

    Follow the steps to apply: 

    Step 1: Click here to download the scholarship application form.
    Step 2: Fill in the application form with the required details.
    Step 3: Attach the necessary documents.
    Step 4: Submit the application along with all the attached documents with the subject at 'Research Student' and file name as 'field of study-name.docx' to the Embassy at scholarship-india@nd.mofa.go.jp

Important Dates
  • Application deadline: 13th May 2019
  • Application Screening: 3rd-4th week of May 2019
  • Notification of shortlisted candidates for Written Test and Interview: 1st/2nd week of June 2019
  • Written Test and Interview: 22 June, 23 June, 29 June, 30 June 2019 
Selection Criteria
  • The applicants will be screened for the first time by the Japanese Diplomatic Mission in which the students will have to qualify the following stages: 
    • Examination of submitted documents 
    • Examination of language proficiency 
    • Interview 
  • After this, the shortlisted applicants will be screened for the second time and further will be provided with their University placement.

  • A typical Master's degree course must be of 2 years to be eligible for the scholarship program.
  • A typical doctoral degree course must be of 3 years to be eligible for the scholarship program. 
  • In case preparatory education is required, a 6-month preparatory education period will be separately added for the applicant. 
  • If a student opts for a Master's or PhD program, the scholarship term may be extended, provided that the applicant has an outstanding academic achievement that meets the criteria set by MEXT.
  • The scholarship amount is subject to change depending on the annual budget each year.
