About The Program

IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program 2026 is an initiative by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) for doctoral degree holders. The objective of this fellowship is to nominate highly motivated, mathematically talented students from developing countries to pursue completion of their doctoral degree in a developing country and in their home country. Selected fellows will receive an amount of $10,000 per year.

 

EligibilityDeadline Date: Closed

To be eligible, an applicant must:-

  • be a resident or citizen of a developing country
  • be either already enrolled in a recognised doctoral program or pre-accepted to join a doctoral program in the first academic year after the time of selection at a recognised university or a research institution
  • demonstrate an outstanding academic track record in mathematical sciences and aspire to a career in mathematical teaching and research
  • have a thesis advisor and a research project

Note:- The host institution must be either a recognised university or a research institution in one of the developing countries as defined by IMU.

  • Basic living expenses (depending on the living costs of the respective country)

How can you apply?

Eligible applicants can apply for the scholarship through the following steps:-

Step 4: Fill in the required details, upload the relevant documents and submit.

Selection Criteria

The Breakout Selection Committee, chaired by the CDC Secretary for Policy, includes three CDC members and one independent representative from South America, Africa, and Europe.

Terms and Conditions
  • The fellowship is incompatible with any other scholarship.
  • The fellowship will be awarded starting from the time of selection in case of awardees already enrolled in a doctoral program, and from the time the awardee enrols in a recognised doctoral program otherwise.
  • Both nominations and accompanying documentation must be submitted in English only. If the documentation furnished were incomplete, the entry would not be accepted for consideration.
  • The fellowship will be sanctioned for one year at a time and is renewable annually, based on satisfactory progress of the awardee and will cease to be awarded when the awardee completes the doctoral program or at the end of four years, whichever is earlier.
  • The awardees of the fellowship and their research supervisors will be asked to submit annual reports to IMU.
  • All awardees will be asked, upon the completion of the PhD programme, to submit a copy of the approved thesis and a final report on the work carried out to IMU.
