About The Program

The CSIR Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme, offered by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), has been instituted to identify promising young researchers with innovative ideas and provide them with training and research opportunities in niche areas of basic science, engineering, medicine, and agriculture. Selected fellows will receive a consolidated fellowship of ₹80,000 per month and other benefits.

To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • be an Indian national, Person of Indian Origin (PIO), Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), or foreign national 
  • be a PhD holder within 3 years of the award of the PhD degree or 
  • have submitted a PhD thesis
  • be below 32 years of age 
  • have research publications in high-impact-factor SCI journals

Note:

  • Age relaxation up to 5 years for SC/ST/Physically handicapped/Women candidates and 3 years for OBC Non-Creamy Layer candidates.
  • Candidates who have worked for their PhD from a particular CSIR laboratory will not be eligible for becoming a PDF in the same CSIR laboratory under this scheme.
Benefits

Selected fellows will receive:

  • Monthly Fellowship: Consolidated fellowship of ₹80,000 per month.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): Payable as admissible.
  • Contingency Grant: ₹3,00,000 per annum.
  • Travel Allowance: Up to 25% of the contingency grant may be used for domestic and international travel, including per diem expenses.

How can you apply?

Eligible applicants can apply by following these steps:
Step 1:
Click on the 'Apply Now' button below.
Step 2: Click on the 'Register' button and fill in the required registration details (Note:- If already registered, log in using Gmail/Mobile number/Email ID).
Step 3: Click on the ‘Annexure-II’ to download the prescribed application form under the ‘How to Apply' tab.
Step 4: Download the ‘Proforma Application’ also.
Step 5: Fill in the application form completely. No column should be left blank. 
Step 6: Route your application through the sponsoring CSIR laboratory.
Step 7: Ensure the application is attested by the Director of the sponsoring CSIR laboratory (applications without this attestation will be rejected)

Important Dates

Application Period: Applications can be submitted at any time throughout the year. Selections are made twice a year, usually in June and December.

Selection Criteria

Selections will be made based on the presentation of the proposed research project, followed by an interview of short-listed candidates by specially constituted Committees.

  • The fellowship is tenable for two years and extendable for a maximum of one more year based on outstanding performance.
  • PhD holders from a particular CSIR laboratory cannot apply to the same laboratory under this scheme.
  • Fellows must abide by all CSIR rules and regulations.
  • The decision taken on applications by CSIR will be final.
  • The selections will be made twice a year, in the months of June and December. Applications received two months before the scheduled interview date will be considered for shortlisting and calling for an interview.
