About The Program

The World Press Institute (WPI) invites applications from professional journalists with at least five years of experience to have the opportunity to become a fellow with the institute. The aim of the program is to gain access, observe the role, responsibility and impacts of a free press firsthand.

The candidates need to fulfil the following eligibility requirements:

  • Have at least five years of full-time experience in print, broadcast or online journalism
  • Must be currently employed as a non-U.S. journalist working outside of the United States
  • Should be fluent in written as well as spoken English
  • Should display a potential for leadership

Note:

  • The eligible journalist should work for editorial or news departments of the newspaper, wire services, websites, television, online publications, radio or magazines.
  • Broadcast producers, photojournalists, editorial cartoonist and columnists will also be eligible.
  • Those who supervise other journalists will also be eligible if they have a minimum of five years as a working journalist.
Benefits

The selected fellows will receive the following perks:

  • Transportation expenses (roundtrip airfare to the United States, travel within the United States related to the WPI Program) 
  • Accommodation
  • Food expenses (a modest daily allowance for expenses on food) 

Note: Fellows are responsible for personal expenses, such as phone, camera, postage and clothing.

Documents

The following documents are required to be submitted by the applicant:

  • Three work samples of the applicant. For more information click here
  • A photo (head and shoulders only against a plain background, that is high enough in resolution to be printed at least 200 dots per inch at a size of approximately 2.5 inches (6.5 centimeters) in height, in either JPG/ JPEG or GIF format)
  • Name and accurate email address of 3 references
How can you apply?

Follow the steps to apply:

Step 1: Create an account by visiting the following link.
Step 2: Validate the account.
Step 3: Log in using the account credentials and then click on "Start an Application".
Step 4: Fill in all the details carefully and attach all the required documents. 
Step 5: Click on "Complete" eventually and save the application.

Note: The candidates should mark themselves as "Applicant" while creating a new account.

Terms and Conditions
  • The candidate is required to participate in periodic reviews and evaluations, including several roundtable discussions to share insights into the U.S. or international journalism issues.
  • The candidate must have acceptance for people belonging to different cultures.
  • The applicant should also be prepared for and participate in all briefings and WPI scheduled events.
  • The candidate should stay through the entirety of the program and return to home countries when the program ends.
  • The applicant has to write for the WPI website among other outlets as assigned. Fellows are also encouraged to share with their readers, listeners or viewers back home.

Q. Am I allowed to apply for the Fellowship and serve as a Reference for another Applicant?
A. No, the candidates are not allowed to apply in the same year. Candidates can serve as a Reference and apply for the Fellowship themselves in separate years.

 

Q. Do my references get instructions before my application is “complete”?
A. No, the instructions to references are sent out only when the candidate marks his/her application as “complete” and save it.

 

Q. Should I send physical materials containing my work samples?

A. No. All work samples must be online for all WPI judges to access them.
