About The Program
The Volkswagen Foundation invites applications for Freethinker Fellowship in Germany from PhD or equivalent academic experience holders. The program selects the best young researchers and young scientists from all disciplines to pursue risky science and optimize their scientific work. It aims to facilitate the implementation of extraordinary research projects and to make a substantial contribution to the establishment of reliable career paths for the coming generation of scientists. The Freigeist (Freethinker) fellows will receive project-related funding of up to EUR 2.2 million.

To be eligible, an applicant must:
- Be a PhD degree holder or have equivalent academic experience from an affiliated academic institution
- Have a connection to a research institution in Germany
- Have received his/her doctorate in the last 1 to 4 years
Note: The focus is on applicants having up to 4 years of postdoctoral experience.
Benefits
The fellows will receive project-related funding of up to EUR 2.2 million for both funding phases.
