About The Program

The University of Tokyo in partnership with the Amgen Foundation invites applications for the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program 2020 from undergraduate scholars who wish to undertake scientific research projects at leading institutions across the world. The program aims at providing 8-weeks of biomedical research experience to the deserving candidates in the basic and translational science. A stipend of JPY 250,000 along with travel costs and accommodation will be offered to the recipients.

To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • Be enrolled in colleges or universities worldwide that award a bachelor’s degree
  • Have at least completed their first year of undergraduate study at the time the summer program begins
  • Not be graduating before the summer program begins, and after the summer program ends will resume undergraduate studies for at least 1 semester or 1 quarter
  • Have a good academic record
  • Have a good working knowledge of English, demonstrated by a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 72, IELTS overall band score of 5.5, Cambridge English FCE, TOEIC score of 1095, TOEIC L&R score of 785, or TOEIC S&W score of 310
  • Be interested in pursuing a PhD

A total of 15 scholars will be selected under this programme. The scholarship includes -

  • Near campus accommodation
  • Travel costs to participate in the program and the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium to be held in Singapore
  • A stipend of JPY 250,000

Important Dates

Application deadline: 3rd February 2020
Notification of results:  Mid-March 2020
Program period: 9th June 2020 to 8th August 2020
Symposium (in Singapore): 6th August 2020 to 8th August 2020

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be selected based on several parameters decided by the Selection Committee.

Terms and Conditions
  • The recipients must arrange for their health and travel insurance.
  • In case of any change in the schedule due to personal reasons, the recipients shall be required to repay the cost of tickets (if booked).
  • The recipients cannot take or hold any other course or job throughout the duration of the program and must attend the program for its entire duration.
  • The recipients have to live in the accommodation provided by the University of Tokyo.
  • The recipients are required to provide a poster/ presentation outlining their research work.
  • The recipient must attend the orientation on June 9 along with all the required conferences, activities and social events associated with the program.
