About The Program

TISS is a unique institution that brings together high quality scholars and practitioners from Social, Economic, Political, Physical, Habitat, Engineering, Health, Environmental Sciences to create interdisciplinary teaching and research programmes combined with field action to address the most critical current and emerging issues of the nation. This website provides information on these programmes and information on admission to these programmes.

Computer based National Entrance test (TISS-NET) will be held on January 09, 2016, from 2pm to 3.40 pm in 39 centres located in different parts of the country. The computer based test is of objective type and even those with a rudimentary knowledge of working with a computer can take the test.

The objective test will have questions related to General Knowledge; Analytical Ability,  Logical Reasoning; and English Proficiency.

Candidates are requested to check the eligibility criteria before filling the application form. Candidates found ineligible will be rejected at any stage in the admission process and no grievances will be entertained in this regard.

 

Instructions for Determining Eligibility to Apply:

( i ) ' Pass Class' in the Bachelor's Degree pursued by the applicant will be taken for determining his/her eligibility.

( ii ) Candidates who are in the final year of their Bachelor's Degree programme, but have not passed in all the courses ( main/major/subsidiary, etc.) of the first and second years ( if the Degree is of 3 years duration) and first, second and third years (if the Degree is of 4 years duration) on the day of applying for the programme are not eligible to apply for any of the Master's Degree programmes offered by the Institute.

( iii ) Candidates who have been declared as failed in the final year examination are not eligible to apply for any of the Master's Degree Programmes of the Institute, unless they pass their Bachelor's Degree examination on the day of applying for any of the programmes.

( iv) Eligibility, once determined on the basis of the information given by the candidates in the Application Form, shall be final for the purpose of test/interview/selection. However, in case it is found that the information furnished by a candidate is incorrect or misleading or ineligibility being detected before or after the test/interview/selection/admission, his/her candidature will be cancelled.

( v ) If a provisionally admitted student fails in the final year of his/her Bachelor's Degree Examination and even if he/she has re-evaluation at the university/college, he/she will not be allowed to continue the programme as the offer of provisional admission stands automatically cancelled on his/her failure in the final year examination.

**GENRAL ELIGIBILITY:

a) Candidates having a bachelor's degree with minimum of 3 years duration or its equivalent ( under the 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 or 10+2+2+1 year bridge course pattern of study or any other pattern fulfilling the mandatory requirements of 15 years formal education)  from a recognized university are eligible to apply

b) At the time of applying candidates studying in 3 year degree progremme should have passed in all the subjects for the 1st to 4th semesters and candidates studying in 4 year degree progrmmes should have passed in all the subjects for 1st to 6th semester. 

 

c) Only those Candidates who will be able to complete all the requirements of their final year Bachelor's Degree examinations by Saturday, June 11, 2016 are eligible to apply to all the programme.

Till the time the candidate submit results of the final year degree examination, admission to any of the Master's Degree Programmes of the Institute will be provisional. The results of the final examination have to be submitted before September 30, 2016. Those who fail to do so the provisional admission stands cancelled.

How can you apply?

Candidates are required to apply online through the E-application process only, please read through this page before filling in the application form.

Candidates facing technical problems while filling in the application form may call 022-25525252 (Monday to Saturday - Timing 8:00 am to 8:00 pm).

However, candidates from remote places where no Internet and Telecommunication facilities are available can get a printed copy of the application form from the Institute. Please send request for printed form by Speed Post with application fees to Asisistant Registrar(Academic), Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Deonar Mumbai, 400088. Please note that candidates applying through the E-application form should not send the application form by post.

General Instructions about applying:

  1. Candidates can apply for a maximum of three programmes across any two of the TISS Campuses and other locations.
  2. Candidates are requested to read through the eligibility criteria mentioned here before filling up the form.
  3. Unemployed candidates, whose parent’s/guardian’s annual income from all the sources for the Financial Year 2014-15 is less than Rs.2.5 Lakhs for SC/ST and Rs.1 lakh for OBC(NC) are required to pay Rs.250/- as Concessional Application Fee for each programme. However they should upload the necessary certificates.
  4. Candidates have to upload/ attach relevant certificates strictly in the format mentioned here. Please refer to the section 'Certificates/ Documents to be uploaded'below
  5. The application fees is Rs.1030 (if being payed by Credit card/ Debit card/ Net Banking) or Rs.1000 + bank charges (if being payed through bank by cash). Candidate has to pay this amount for every programme he applies for. For more details refer to the section 'Application fee payment' below.
  6. A candidate can apply for multiple programmes and pay for those programmes in one online form and should not fill more than one form. If a candidate is found to have filled more than one online form, all his applications will be cancelled.

Notes: (i) In case of payment by cash deposit in an SBI branch, please note that the SBI will charge Rs. 50/- as their processing fee for each deposit, which cannot be adjusted against the application fee.

(ii) Payments made via demand draft, pay order or any mode other than the above modes is not acceptable and the application will be rejected. No communication to this effect will be sent to such candidates.

(iii) Candidates applying online will be asked to choose between two modes of payment 'Cash' or 'Pyment Gateway' in the online application form. If the preferred mode of payment is 'Cash', a payment challan has to be downloaded from the 'Download Challan' tab. The payment challan will have 3 copies. Deposit the cash amount mentioned on the challan in any branch of State Bank Of India. The bank will return two copies of the challan (Student Copy and TISS Copy) with the banks seal, signature and journal number on it. Candidates have to scan the 'TISS Copy' of the challan, login back to the online application system and upload it.

Terms and Conditions

Eligibility for Pre-Interview Test (PIT)/ or Personal Interview (PI)

Short-listing of candidates for the second round of selection (PIT and PI) will be based on the merit list for online test (cut-off marks to be decided later by the Institute). Only short-listed candidates will receive call letters for the second round (PIT and PI) to be held in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Guwahati. The Pre-Interview Test consists of a Written Test.

Detailed Application Form For all Programmes: Candidates short-listed for PIT and PI will be required to download the Detailed Application Form, which will be available in the third week of February 2016. Candidates are requested to check the admissions website in the third week of February

For all the programmes across TISS Campuses, the PIT will be in the form of a Written Test.

Personal Interview (PI):

The candidate is expected to be acquainted with the programme for which he/she has applied for, as questions may be asked on the related topics during the PI.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE DURING PIT and PI at TISS Campuses:

Dining Hall:

Coupons can be purchased from the Cash Counter and the Hostel In-charge, if applicants wish to have tea/lunch in the Dining Hall of the Institute.

Facilities for SC and ST Candidates Eligible for Govt. of India (GoI) Post-Matric Scholarship:

(i) Reimbursement of Travelling Allowance (TA), etc.: If the SC/ST candidates, appearing for the National Entrance Tests of any of the Institute’s Master’s Degree programmes for the first time, are unemployed, and their parent’s/guardian’s income was less than Rs. 2.5 lakh, during the financial year 2014–2015 and have submitted a certificate to this effect, they will be provided to-and-fro travel expenses (Second Class Railway or State Transport Bus fare) immediately after the Online Written Test is over at every centre. The reimbursement of the travel expenses will be subject to their submission of the original onward journey ticket and only on the production of caste/tribe, income certificate, specifying the income level of the candidate. It will be the responsibility of the SC/ST and OBC(NC) candidates to fill in the TA form provided, along with a photocopy of the call letter for the Online Written Test before they appear for it and collect the money as soon as the test gets over.

(ii) Reporting at the Institute for PIT and PI: SC/ST candidates, who are eligible for such facilities, should report at any one or two TISS Campuses only after receiving the call letter/mail for PIT and PI. They will be reimbursed to-and-fro travel expenses (Second Class Railway or State Transport Bus fare) from both the campuses.

(iii) SC/ST candidates, who have already availed of such facilities, but were not selected in a previous attempt and who have been called for the test again will not be reimbursed their travel expenses. The boarding, lodging and travelling expenses incurred by them during the Written Test at the Centre, and the PIT and PI at the Institute will be reimbursed only if they are selected.

(iv) SC/ST candidates, who have received financial assistance to enrol for a Master’s Degree programme of the Institute in one field, will not be eligible for similar facilities if they apply for another Master’s Degree programme of the Institute.

PIT/PI is organised at Mumbai, Hyderabd and Guwahati. Candidates for programmes from Mumbai and Tuljapur campuses will come to Mumbai Campus for the PIT/PI. Candidates selected for prrogrammes at Hyderabad'Guwahati will have go to these campuses for PIT/PI.

Q.1 I am Facing a Document upload issue, what should i do?

A. Candidates are requested to follow the following steps :

Step 1 : Candidates should first check the list of documents to be uploaded in the FAQ and should keep the same ready before they log in.

Step 2 : Candidates are advised to complete the application process in one session to minimize the possibility of document not being uploaded.

Step 3 : If the Candidate closes the application during the process with / without uploading all the required documents - then make sure to check if those documents were successfully uploaded when you log in the next time. 

Step 4 : If Document upload fails once , you are advised to check the size or resolution or the file type of the documents you are uploading (check FAQ for size and format guidelines) and re upload the documents. Even if the size and resolution is correct please try uploading once more.

Step 5 : In case, the Candidate is not able to upload documents even after following the above steps then the documents can be e-mailed. Follow these instructions :

The reservation for Kashmiri Migrants (KM) 1 % and Armed Forced 5% subject to the Government of India (Goi) Directives.

Ans: We conduct post-admission orientation programme, remedial coaching classes and various need based programmes. Besides, scholarship for eligible students as per Goi rules. For more details you may refer to SC/ST cell information booklet in the website (Page No. 8).

Ans: No

  1. Do you offer admission to Deputed / Sponsored Candidates?

Ans: In the case of Government Officers/employees from Departments of Education/SCERTs/DIETs, Teachers and Resources Persons applying for the M.A. Education (Elementary)/all other programmes filled application forms may be sent via the relevant authority nominating the candidates. The selection of such candidates will be through a suitable screening process comprising documentary evidence of interest and motivation of the programme or an interview.

The sponsored candidates will have to write a brief essay of about 500-1000 words as a statement of purpose, explaining their current role in their respective unions, why they would like to join this course and how this course will strengthen their involvement after they complete this course when return to their respective unions. The student should carry a recommendation letter from the trade union he/she belongs to clearly stating that he/she is actively involved in the trade union activities and that he/she will return to his/her trade union activities after completion of the course. The candidates will then go through a telephonic interview. If he/she is selected, their unions will have to pay a fee of 300 Euros (equivalent Indian currency) to the Institute so as to show their commitment to the programme. All candidates sponsored by the trade unions are eligible for a Global Labour University (GLU) scholarship, which pays their fee, health insurance, one return ticket to and from Mumbai, accommodation and pocket allowance for the entire duration of the course.

Ans: We do not offer any MBA programme, but we have an M.A. in Human Resources Management and Labour Relations (HRM & LR) programme.

ACCOMMODATION FACILITY

1. Do you provide hostel accommodation?

Ans: Yes, we have limited hostel facilities. Preference is given to candidates coming from outside Mumbai on the basis of income criteria, particularly SC/STs. Besides, we do help the selected candidates finding off-campus paying guest accommodation in the neighborhood closer to our Institute.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. What is the eligibility criteria?

Ans: a) A Bachelor’s Degree of a minimum of 3 years duration or its equivalent (under the 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 or 10+2+2+1 year bridge course pattern of study or any other pattern fulfilling the mandatory requirements of 15 years formal education) from a recognized university, in any discipline.

b) Candidates who will complete all the requirements of their final year Bachelor’s Degree examinations by June 10, 2015 are also eligible to apply to all the programmes, except the programmes offered by the School of Health Systems Studies; and for M.A. in Education (Elementary) candidates, May 12, 2015, provided they have successfully completed their first and second years, if the degree course is of 3 years; and the first, second and third years, if the degree course is of 4 years duration. In such cases, admission to any of the Master’s Degree Programmes of the Institute will be provisional. If a provisionally admitted student fails in the final year examination, the offer of provisional admission automatically stands cancelled.

c) Candidates applying for the Master of Public Health in Health Policy, Economics and Finance; and Master of Public Health in Social Epidemiology Programmes should have (i) A Master’s Degree in any discipline, or (ii) A Bachelor’s Degree in medicine / para-medical courses.

d) Candidates who are in their final year Bachelor’s Degree Programme are not eligible to apply for admission to any of the Master’s Degree programmes, conducted by School of Health System Studies, i.e., Health Administration; Hospital Administration; Public Health in Social Epidemiology; and Public Health in Health Policy, Economics and Finance.

e) Candidates applying for the Master in Habitat Policy and Practice should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Management, Physical Science, Geography, Planning, Law or Social Sciences, with some inclination towards habitat related issues / sectors.

Note: Medical graduates should complete their internship on or before June 10, 2015. Otherwise, their candidature / admission stands cancelled.

Ans: Yes, provided the Institute / University / College is recognized by UGC / AICTE.

MODE OF APPLICATION

  1. a) How to apply?

Ans: We generally post our advertisement in regard to admissions in national and regional newspapers around last week of September every year. The same information is also made available at our website: www.tiss.edu. All the candidates are requested to apply online, however the facility for offline application is available only for candidates coming from remote areas only where Internet facility are not available like North-East, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand etc

b) If I want to apply for more than one programme, whether I can submit one application form?

Ans: A candidate can apply for a maximum of 3 programmes in two campuses in the same application form.

c) How much is the fees for application form?

Ans : a ) For General candidates :

Rs. 1000/- for One programme

Rs. 1000/- x 2 = Rs.2000/- for Two programmes ( Bank charges additional )

Rs. 1000/- x 3 = Rs. 3000/- for Three programmes ( Bank charges additional )

b ) For SC / ST candidates :

Rs 250 /- For One Programme ( Bank charges additional )

Rs. 250/- x 2 = Rs.500/- for Two programmes ( Bank charges additional )

Rs. 250/- x 3 = Rs. 750/- for Three programmes ( Bank charges additional )

However, you have to pay this amount through prescribed challan to any branch of the State Bank of India. And the portion of the challan marked for TISS should be scan and upload along with the application form while submitting the application form online.

d) Is the Application Form Fee refundable?

Ans: No

e) What are the documents required to submit along with the application form?

Ans: The following documents required: -

SELECTION PROCEDURE / NATURE OF TEST

  1. a) What is the selection procedure?

Ans: TISS has its own National  Entrance Test i.e. TISS NET  which will be held on Saturday in the month of January 9 , 2016 for the academic year 2016-2018 from 2pm to 3.40 pm. The selection process comprises of 3 steps:

  1. National Entrance Test ( Computer based Exam )

  2. ii) Descriptive type written test

  3. iii) Personal Interview for all programmes.

  4. Please note we do not accept CAT / MAT / CET / GRE / GMAT scores.

b) Do you have any cut-off marks for the selection?

Ans: Yes, minimum qualifying marks for written test is 35% (for SC/ST) and 45% (for others). However, scoring mere qualifying marks in the written test does not guarantee a seat for a programme. Admission is based on Merit List. For more details, please refer to Information Brochure under “Selection Procedure”.

c) What type of preparation do I need to make for the National Written test, group discussion/ written test and interview?

Ans: In the national written test in online format will be held on January 9, 2016, in 39 centres in all parts of the country. The Online test is of objective type and even those with a rudimentary knowledge of working with computer can take the test. The objective test will have questions related to Knowledge on Contemporary issues, Analytical Ability, General Knowledge and Logical Reasoning. Those who clear NET then they will call for PIT/PI ii) Except Mumbai Social Work programmes all other programmes have a written test the format is to write an essay in an descriptive form to a set of questions from given case study focusing mainly on social, socio-economic, socio-political issues at the micro- as well as macro-level. Besides, for some programmes, the written test includes logical analysis and reasoning with figure etc. and simple mathematics.

d) Is there any question bank available in the market or coaching provided to the candidates?

Ans: No, there is no question bank available in the market. However, the last year’s question papers will be uploaded in the website. Though, there is no coaching conducted for the entrance.

e) How many times one can appear for the entrance test?

Ans: You can make attempts as many as you want.

However SC/ST (only Goi) candidates can appear for 2 times without paying application fee but if they wish to appear again, they have to pay the application fees like any other candidate.

  1. Where is the National Written Test conducted?

Ans: We have 35 centres all over India; you can choose any one of these centres refer to the website.

  1. In case, I need to change the test centre later, what is the procedure.

Ans: Only in case of genuine reasons for changing the centre you have to inform the Assistant Registrar (Academic) by E-mail or by Phone.

 

DECLARATION OF RESULT

  1. What is the date of declaration of the result of the National Written Test?

Ans: February 2, 2016.

  1. Month of GD/PI and the declaration of final selection result

Ans: GD/PI will be held in the month of March and the final selection result will be declared in the month of April 23, 2015. For details please refer Information Brochure.

 

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

  1. What is the procedure for verifying Original Documents?

Ans: Document verification will be done after re -opening of classes between 15 June to 3o June 2015 All the original documents from Xth standard onwards should be produced for verification.

2. What is Pre-admission Medical check-up?

Ans: All the provisionally selected candidates have to undergo for the Medical check-up which will be conducted by the Medical Officers of the Institute after verification of original documents on the same Day .

 

FEE PAYMENT

Ans: You can pay your fees in any branch of SBI before coming for document verification after downloading the Challan from the Institute’s website.
