The Rhodes Trust, University of Oxford is offering The Rhodes Scholarships for India, University of Oxford 2019 to Indian undergraduate degree holders with first class grades. The students, who are in the final year of undergraduate degree programme are also eligible for the scholarship. The selected candidates receive a full tuition fee and other additional benefits.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, an applicant must:

    • Be an Indian citizen (holding an Indian passport, or equivalent proof of citizenship).
    • Be at least 19 years old and not have passed his/her 25th birthday on 1 October 2020 (Note: The students born after 30 September 1995 and on or before 1 October 2001 can apply).
    • Have undertaken formal study at an educational institution in India for a minimum of 4 of the last 10 years.
    • Have either completed a school leaving exam (10th or 12th standard or equivalent) at a school in India, or have received, or be in the final year of an undergraduate degree at a university in India.
    • Have completed the undergraduate degree (or will complete by June / July 2020) with First class or equivalent.
    • Be willing to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Oxford, UK.
    Benefits

    Every year, a total of 5 scholarships are given to selected students. The scholarship covers the following benefits:

    • University and College fees
    • University application fee
    • Living stipend of approx. GBP 15,144 per annum
    • Two economy class airfare to and from the UK at the beginning and the end of the studies in Oxford
    • A settling-in allowance of approx. GBP 225 at the time of arrival
    • International health surcharge to cover the scholar for the duration of the scholarship
    Documents
    • Birth certificate or valid passport confirming that the applicant meets the age criterion
    • Valid passport (with translation, if necessary), confirming that the candidate meets the citizenship criteria
    • An official transcript from the college or university
    • Official transcripts of class 10th and 12th standard (or equivalent) school leaving board examinations
    • A detailed curriculum vitae in not more than two A4 pages with a font size of 12 pt. 
    • A head-and-shoulder coloured photograph of the applicant in jpg format
    • A personal statement, in not more than 1,000 words
    • List of six referees

    Step 4: Fill in all the required details and upload the documents to complete the application.

    Note: Applications for 2020 session will begin from 1 June 2019.

Important Dates

Applications for India must be received by midnight, India Standard Time, 31 July 2019.

Selection Criteria

The broad selection criteria considered are -

  • The academic excellence of the student.
  • The capability of the students to use their talent to the full.
  • Qualities like truth, courage, devotion to duty, kindliness, fellowship, unselfishness and sympathy for and protection of the weak.
  • The moral force of the character and instincts to lead.

  • No selection will be made if a sufficiently qualified candidate cannot be found.
  • The personal statement should tell the story in the applicant's voice answering the following questions:
    • Who are they?
    • What matters to them?
    • What are they hoping to do in the world?
    • Their academic transcript, curriculum vitae and reference letters should provide the substantive detail of their commitments and accomplishments, but the essay should give the opportunity to cast the overarching narrative for the selection committee.
  • Applicants will need to provide a list of six people (referees) who are willing to submit references on their behalf.
  • Applicants should not upload documents, certificates, testimonials or links / URL’s other than those required.
  • No alternate method of application is accepted.
  • There is no application fee for submission of the Rhodes Scholarship application form.
