About The Program

The Fountain Essay Contest 2018 organised by The Fountain Magazine invites essay entries from writers all over the world. The theme of this year's contest is "Should We Be Grateful?". All the interested participants should write a 1500-2500 word essay on the given theme. The winner of the contest can win up to USD 1000.

Benefits

The winners of the contest will get a chance to earn cash prizes and have their essays published in The Fountain magazine. The cash prizes will be in the following manner:

  • The first place winner will receive USD 1000
  • The second place winner will receive USD 500
  • The third place winner will receive USD 300
  • Two honourable mentions will receive USD 150 each
How can you apply?

Follow the below steps to enter the contest:

Step 1: Write a 1500-2500 word essay on the theme "Should We Be Grateful?"
Step 2: Visit the essay submission link.
Step 3: Provide the necessary details.
Step 4: Upload the essay file.
Step 5: Submit the essay.

Note: Only Word documents can be uploaded.

Selection Criteria

The winners of the contest will be selected on the basis of literary effectiveness of the essay in reflecting the philosophy behind the motto, richness in content and authenticity. The winners will be selected by the board of The Fountain based on the following criteria -

  • Relevance to the contest theme (40 points)
  • Innovation and creativity (30 points)
  • Writing style and structure (30 points)
Terms and Conditions
  • In terms of writing style, there should be consistency in the essay. The 'Chicago Manual of Style' is preferred but other styles are also acceptable.
  • The submitted essays might be published in web and print editions of The Fountain magazine. Submitting essays gives The Fountain the right to publish it in any medium.
  • Only one entry per person is allowed.
  • Essays with missing titles will be disqualified.
  • Offensive and devotional essays will be disqualified.
  • The essay will be disqualified if its word count exceeds the 2500 limit by more than 200 words or if it is less than 900 words.

Q. Who is eligible to participate in the contest?
A.
The contest is open to writers from all over the world. There is no age limit or a condition to fulfil for entry. Anyone who wants to share his/her ideas can participate in the essay contest.

 

Q. What qualifies as a good essay?
A.
A good essay is the one that the author feels comfortable with. A concise essay is always better. It must be authentic and unique, clearly putting the theme into words.

 

Q. Do we have to include references, bibliography, notes, etc. as in an academic journal?
A. 
Since The Fountain is not an academic journal, it does not expect a full-scale reference list. But there should at least be a reasonable number of references.


Q. Would an essay in the short story genre qualify for the contest?
A.
Yes. The only condition is that the essay must relate to the theme of the contest while also maintaining the values and principles of The Fountain.
