About The Program

Spencer Foundation invites applications for Small Research Grants on Education 2019 from Public Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs who hold a doctorate degree in an academic discipline or professional field. The grant aims at supporting the education research projects that contribute to the improvement of education. The foundation accepts applications for the grant thrice a year. The key objective of the grant is to support intellectually ambitious, technically sound and rigorous research.

The grant is not open for individuals. Proposals are invited from Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs for academic research projects that aim to study education. The applicants must fulfil the following conditions -

  • They must have a doctorate degree in an academic discipline or professional field, OR
  • They must have appropriate experience in the education-related profession.
  • The PIs are expected to be affiliated with a university, college, non-profit research facility, school district or a non-profit cultural institution that is willing to serve as the administering organisation for the grant.

Note: Graduate students can be a part of the research team, but they may not be named as PI or Co-PI in the proposal.

The grant supports research with budget up to USD 50,000 for projects ranging from one to five years.

How can you apply?

Eligible candidates can apply for the grant online through following steps -
Step 1: Visit the official notification of the grant. 
Step 2: Click on the 'Apply now' button in the end. 
Step 3: Register as a new user by clicking on the 'Register Here' button.
Step 4: Create a profile by filling all the required information.
Step 5: Upload all supporting documents. 
Step 6: Submit the application.

Selection Criteria

The selection of the candidates is done using a peer-review process that approximately takes 4 to 5 months. The review process involves two stages -

  • External peer review of all proposals that meet basic requirements by two members of the review panel.
  • Reading of the finalist material by Spencer staff to make funding recommendations.

  • All proposals must be submitted in the English language and the budget must be proposed in US dollars.
  • The maximum budget limit for research is USD 50,000 and it may not include indirect cost charges as per Spencer policy.
  • The maximum duration of the project should be 5 years.
  • The PIs and Co-PIs may not submit more than one application for a given deadline. 
  • There is no requirement to submit a letter of intent to apply for the grant.
  • The application of the grant is configured only for the Principal Investigator (PI) on the project. 
  • For Co-PIs to apply, the PI needs to register first and provide their login details to the Co-PIs for their registration.
