About The Program

The Simons Foundation invites PhD degree holders to apply for the Simons Postdoctoral Fellowships in Marine Microbial Ecology 2019. The fellowship aims to support research on fundamental problems in marine microbial ecology. Candidates involved in ocean research as well as those with training in different fields can apply for this fellowship. A total of five fellowships will be awarded in 2019 with each fellowship offering up to USD 62,000 per annum.

The following can apply for the fellowship-

  • PhD or equivalent degree holders (within the last 3 years)
  • Applicants involved in ocean research
  • Applicants with training in different fields who want to apply their experience to understanding the role of microorganisms in shaping ocean processes and vice versa
  • Applicants with experience in modeling or theory development

Note: Preference will be given to applicants with no more than one year of postdoctoral experience. Applicants may be the citizens of any country.

Benefits

The fellowship will be for a duration of 3 years. The fellowship will include the following-

  • An annual stipend of USD 62,000
  • An annual allowance of up to USD 25,000

Note: The allowance may be spent on health insurance for the fellow and family, other benefits as required by the institution, research supplies, small equipment (including computers), attendance at scientific meetings and other research-related travel.

  • Letters of recommendation (4)
  • A short summary of prior research experience and a personal autobiographical statement (two pages)
  • Brief research proposal with the title (two to three pages, plus references and one page for figures)
  • Biographical sketches
  • Renewable reagents and data-sharing plan
  • Signed signature page with institutional approval to document the commitment from the fellow’s institution(s) to administer the fellowship

Step 3: Begin proposal submission after logging in on the proposal portal.
Step 4: Complete all the proposalCENTRAL modules by providing relevant information and documents.
Step 5: After providing all the information, click on Submit.

Note: The candidates won't be able to submit if all the required information is not provided.

  • Application available: 15th March 2019
  • Application deadline: 14th June 2019
  • Applicants notified of funding decisions: 13th September 2019
  • Accept or decline deadline: 1st October 2019
  • Fellowships commence: First of the month between 1st October 2019 and 1st April 2020
Terms and Conditions
  • Awards can only be issued to nonprofit research universities or research institutions in the U.S.
  • Up to USD 2,000 of the allowance may be used for relocation of the fellow and family to the host institution.
  • The fellowship payment cannot be made directly to fellows. No indirect or overhead costs may be charged.
  • No extensions will be given for the proposals.
