About The Program

The Yale Institute of Sacred Music invites applications from postdoctoral students and doctoral students at the dissertation stage for short-term fellowships for research on the aural, material, visual, ritual, and textual cultures of religions. The fellowships will be awarded to students for a duration of 1–3 months during which the Yale University Collections, which are among the deepest and widest ranging of any university, are open to the students, scholars and the public alike. Short Term Collections Based Fellowships at Yale 2018-19 will cover the living expenses as well as the grant for round-trip travel.

EligibilityDeadline Date: Closed

Doctoral students who are at the dissertation stage and scholars who hold the PhD or equivalent terminal degree are eligible for this fellowship.

Benefits
  • A grant toward round-trip travel in economy class from the candidate's home to New Haven.
  • Honorarium for living expenses of USD 3000 per month for doctoral candidates.
  • Honorarium for living expenses of USD 4000 per month for scholars holding the doctorate.

Note: Fellows are responsible for locating and funding their own housing.

Documents
  • CV not exceeding 10 pages in length.
  • Project proposal of not more than 1200 words.
  • A 250-word project abstract.
  • A sample of scholarly work of not more than 30 pages.
  • Three letters of reference.

Step 4: A temporary PIN will be sent to the registered Email address. Enter the PIN and create a new password.
Step 5: Click on 'Start New Application'.
Step 6: Select the application type and click on 'Open Application'.
Step 7: Read application instructions, click on 'Continue' and proceed with the application.
Step 8: Provide all the relevant details, upload the required documents and submit the application.

  • Fellowship announcement notification: 15 February 2019
Terms and Conditions
  • For the Beinecke Library only, fellowships are restricted to September 1–May 31 for postdoctoral fellows, and June 1–August 31 for doctoral candidates.
  • The faculty, staff and students of Yale are not eligible for this fellowship.
  • Researchers must free themselves of most other work during the fellowship period and are expected to reside in the vicinity of Yale.
  • Those accepted as fellows will have access to all of Yale’s libraries and the portion of the collections they have proposed to research, where they will also be given space to conduct their work.
  • Scholars must free themselves of other teaching or work responsibilities during the course of the fellowship and may not hold other fellowships simultaneously.
