The University College Dublin invites applications from Master in Science/Engineering students for PhD scholarship in Civil Engineering 2020. The title of the project will be "Indirect bridge health monitoring using the artificial neural network (ANN)". The selected scholar will get a stipend of  EUR 18,000 per annum and Univerity College Dublin's tuition fees at EU/non-EU rates

    Applicants must:

    • Have an honours Level 8 degree in science or engineering or a related discipline or Masters in Civil / Structural / Mechanical / Engineering.
    • Fulfil UCD minimum English language requirements 
    Benefits

    The selected scholar will get an annual stipend of EUR 18,000 for four years and University College Dublin tuition fees at EU/non-EU rates.

    • Detailed CV
    • Letter of motivation (max 2 pages, single-spaced)
    • Previous transcripts
    • Name of two referees

Selection Criteria

The students possessing the following characteristics will be preferred - 

  • Good communication and writing skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Aptitude for multidisciplinary research approaches
  • Fieldwork ability
  • Ability to work with Matlab
  • Background in engineering (Civil Structural/Mechanical)
  • Background in structural dynamics and vibrations with an emphasis on lab/fieldwork
  • Ability to work as part of a team, including collaboration with other disciplines but also independently
  • Strives for the high quality of work and demonstrates a commitment to the project
  • Ability to communicate effectively to enable knowledge and technology transfer
Terms and Conditions

The candidate will be performing the following tasks during the project:

  • Developing a numerical framework for the indirect bridge damage detection using ANN using 1D finite element
  • Further studies of the algorithms using a 3D finite element of vehicle bridge interaction
  • Experimental validation of the algorithms using a laboratory-scale vehicle bridge interaction model
