About The Program

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade (MFAT), Government of New Zealand invites applications for the New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships 2020 from masters and PhD applicants residing in India. The scholarship provides the selected scholars with the opportunity to continue their education in New Zealand and receive multiple other benefits.

To be eligible, an applicant must -  

  • Be residing in India at the time of applying
  • Have completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the specified subject or related fields for admission to a Master’s or PhD programme respectively.
  • Be 18 years of age or above before the start of the scholarship
  • Be proficient in the English language with a valid test score of IELTS/TOEFL/PTE
Benefits

The following benefits will be received by the selected scholars: 

  • Full tuition fee waiver
  • A living allowance (stipend) of NZD 491 per week
  • An establishment allowance of NZD 3,000  (a one-time payment as a contribution towards the accommodation expenses, textbooks, study materials etc.) 
  • Medical and travel insurance
  • Travel expenses to and from the scholar’s home country (This constitutes travel from the scholar’s home country at the commencement of the scholarship and for the return to scholar’s home country at the end of the scholarship)
  • Help with research and thesis costs (for postgraduate students)

Note: The scholarships are offered for the shortest duration needed by the scholar to complete the academic programme.

Documents

The following documents will be required for the application procedure: 

  • Applicant's photograph and signature
  • Scanned copy of duly filled application form
  • IELTS/TOEFL score card 
  • Academic transcripts and certificates 
  • Letter of reference 
  • The proposed plan of study, in not more than 500 words
  • Publication (if required) 
  • Any other relevant documentation

Note: The nominating agency for Indian students is MHRD. After the students have submitted their applications, the MHRD will nominate only two candidates for the scholarship.

The students are selected after considering the following attributes -

  • Academic merit
  • Commitment towards the social and economic development of the country
  • Selection of courses should align with the recommended subjects

  • Study plan quality for the Master's applicants is as follows:
    • The extent to which the proposed course or institution the applicants have chosen to study has been well researched (including specific options and dissertation topics) and presented.
    • The clarity of presentation
  • Study plan quality for the PhD applicants is as follows: 
    • The extent to which the study program has been well researched and thought of, including the identification of appropriate institutions and also the supervisor.
    • The degree of innovation
    • Likely impact
    • The clarity of presentation
    • The relevance to the field
    • Feasibility
  • The Government of India does not provide any financial assistance to the selected scholars.
  • PhD candidates are advised to obtain a letter of support from their proposed supervisor.
  • No formal offer of admission from any New Zealand University is required at the time of applying.
  • The scholarship is being offered under two broad themes namely, Climate Change and Resilience AND Good Governance.
