To be eligible, an applicant must -
- be an Indian national
- be a scholar or writer working on different aspects of the history of independent India
Note - Past fellows under the NIF Book Fellowship are also eligible to apply.
Benefits
Each fellowship carries a grant of INR 18 lakhs payable as per the following schedule:
- INR 1 lakh will be payable as a monthly stipend for a period of 12 months
- INR 6 lakhs will be payable upon the submission of the final manuscript by the fellow to the publisher

Selection Criteria
The candidates will be selected based on the following criteria -
- Applications will be invited through select advertising by the NIF in leading journals and online platforms.
- The NIF Trustees shall assess the proposals and prepare a shortlist of eligible candidates.
- The shortlisted candidates will be subject to a thorough interview process with a jury consisting of the NIF Trustees as well as other eminent persons from the worlds of scholarship, business and social service.

- The fellows will have the opportunity to choose to write a memoir, a detailed reportage or a broadly academic study.
- The fellow will undertake to provide the completed manuscript to the Publisher within a period of 12 (twelve) months from the commencement of the Fellowship with the NIF.
- All Applications will be checked for eligibility by the Trustees. Any discrepancies during such eligibility checks may lead to the disqualification of the candidate.
- Candidates will have to give a declaration that all the outputs and materials are originally created by them and that they have not copied any content.
- The fellowship proposals should be oriented towards the final publication of the book, and a clear road map to this eventual destination is to be outlined by the applicants.
