About The Program

The National Geographic Photo Contest 2018 invites photographers around the globe to share some compelling, surprising, and stirring photographs that share a new view of our world and all that's in it. Photos may be submitted under three categories namely wildlife, people, and places. The winner of the contest will receive an amount of USD 5000.

The photography contest is open to individuals who have reached the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry.

Note: Officers, directors and employees of National Geographic Partners, and its subsidiaries and affiliates, and their respective immediate family members or persons living in the same households of such employees, whether or not related are not eligible to enter the Contest or win a prize.

Benefits
  • The grand prize winner will receive USD 5000. The winning image will also be featured on the Instagram page of NatGeo.
  • First place winners will receive USD 2500.
  • Second place winners will receive USD 1500.
  • Third place winners will receive USD 750.
How can you apply?

To enter the contest, an applicant needs to submit the entry fee, an entry form and a single photograph. Follow the below steps to apply-

Step 1: Visit the contest website.
Step 2: Click on 'ENTER PHOTO'.
Step 3: Sign in using existing id or using facebook. Register in case of new users.
Step 4: Fill in the entry form with the required information, including name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and photo caption.
Step 5: Submit the photograph along with the entry fee.

Note: Participants can submit their entries under three categories namely Wildlife, Places, and People.

  • Applications open: 15th October 2018
  • Applications close: 15th November 2018
Selection Criteria

The winners will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Creativity (35%)
  • Photographic quality (35%)
  • Composition (30%)
Terms and Conditions

Entry fee:

  • USD 10 per entry if the participant enters by 21 October 2018
  • USD 15 per entry if the participant enters by 28 October 2018
  • USD 20 per entry if the participant enters by 4 November 2018
  • USD 25 per entry if the participant enters from 5 November 2018 to 15 November 2018

Submission requirements:

  • Submissions must be in digital format only. 
  • Only online entries will be eligible. 
  • The photograph need not be taken with a digital camera; scans of negatives, transparencies, or photographic prints are acceptable. 
  • All digital files must be 20 megabytes or smaller, must be in JPEG or .jpg format, and must be at least 1,600 pixels wide (if a horizontal image) or 1,600 pixels tall (if a vertical image).
  • Submissions must have been taken within 2 years before the date of entry and may not previously have won an award in any of the National Geographic contest.
  • Only minor burning, dodging and/or colour correction is acceptable, as is minor cropping.
  • High dynamic range images (HDR) and stitched panoramas are acceptable.
  • Watermarks are unacceptable.

Applicants will receive a confirmation email from PayPal.com and a notification in the National Geographic member center inbox.

Q. It says I must be the age of majority to enter. What is the age of majority?

The age of majority varies from place to place. One can check the website of his/her state or local jurisdiction, or call government offices to get information specific to the place of residence.
