About The Program

The Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science, California invites applications for the Miller Research Fellowship 2019 from young scientists holding a PhD degree. The aim of the institute is to discover and encourage individuals of outstanding talent and to give them the opportunity to pursue their research on the Berkeley campus in California. The fellows have the opportunity to win a stipend of USD 65,000 and other benefits.

EligibilityDeadline Date: Closed

The following applicants are eligible to apply for the fellowship: 

  • Should be an exceptional young scientist of great promise
  • Should recently have been awarded, or is about to be awarded, the doctoral degree
  • Should prove his/her English language proficiency prior to award
  • Should have obtained a J-1 Scholar visa (for non-US citizens)

Note: Applicants who have already completed postdoctoral training are unlikely to be successful except in unusual circumstances. Postdocs cannot have had more than 2 years of postdoctoral experience from other institutions, nor been employed as an assistant professor, associate professor or professor.

Benefits

The selected fellows will receive the following benefits: 

  • A stipend of USD 65,000 with annual increases on subsequent anniversary dates
  • A research fund of USD 10,000 per annum
  • Provision for travel to Berkeley for Miller Fellows and their immediate families
  • An additional allowance of USD 3,000 for the transport of personal belongings

Note: This stipend is not to be construed as a salary for teaching or for duties rendered to the University of California.

  • Application deadline: 10th October 2019 
  • Awards offering: Mid December 2019 to Mid-February 2020
Selection Criteria

Fellows are shortlisted based on their academic achievement and the promise of their scientific research.

  • The online nomination form must be completed in a single session.
  • If an applicant's nomination letter is not ready to be uploaded at immediately, go back to the form site later to submit the nomination.
  • All further communication will be done by email, so ensure the accuracy of email address.
  • Self-nominations are not accepted.
  • The applicants are required to include their potential host as a reference. 
  • The applicant's files may be reviewed by potential host departments for consideration for positions other than the Miller Research Fellowship.
