About The Program

EMBO is offering Long Term Fellowships, EMBO 2019 to PhD degree holders. The EMBO Long-Term Fellowships are awarded for a period of up to two years and support post-doctoral research visits to laboratories throughout Europe and the world. The selected fellows receive a stipend and other allowances under this fellowship programme.

To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • Hold a doctorate degree or equivalent at the start of the fellowship
  • Have at least one first author publication accepted in or published in an international peer-reviewed journal at the time of application
  • Involve movement between countries during the PhD

Important Note:

  • The candidates who already hold a PhD degree at the time of application can apply only if they have obtained their PhD degree during two years prior to the date of application.
  • The candidates who have already started working in the host laboratory can apply if they have been working for less than six months in the host laboratory at the time of application. 

 

Benefits

The selected fellows receive the following benefits -

  • A stipend to cover the cost of living in the host country.
  • Dependent child allowance for dependent children under the age of 18. The value of the allowance depends on the country being visited.
  • Childcare allowance of up to EUR 2.500 per child and per year.
  • Travel allowance of up to EUR 5.000 to cover the cost of travel.
  • Parental leave

  • EMBO fellow meetings and laboratory leadership courses
  • Private pension schemes

How can you apply?

Follow the steps to apply for the fellowships:

Step 1: Visit the link to register and create a login account to start a new application.
Step 2: Login to add information related to personal detail, referee detail, propose work and present work, PhD and postdoc work, etc.
Step 3: Upload a scientific CV, grant information, etc.
Step 4: Submit the application form.

Important Dates
  • Any complete applications received by second Friday of February, 2 pm CET will be evaluated in their spring meeting, with interviews conducted in April.
  • Applications received by second Friday of August, 2 pm CEST, will be evaluated in their autumn meeting, with interviews in October.
  • There is no application deadline for EMBO Long-Term Fellowships.
Selection Criteria
  • Eligible applications are sent to the fellowship committee for pre-screening and twice the number of available fellowships will be selected for an interview.
  • During the pre-screening, the committee reviews a condensed application form.
  • Applicants who successfully pass the pre-screening have to appear for a personal or video interview. An interviewer, who is an expert in the area of the application, will be selected from among the EMBO Members and EMBO Young Investigators. (Note: In case, a personal or video interview is not possible, the candidate's application is sent for written evaluation).
  • The Fellowship Committee then meets to take the final funding decisions.
  • Results are announced in 14-16 weeks after the evaluation deadline.

Terms and Conditions
  • Interviews normally take place within 6-10 weeks of the evaluation deadline. The interview may take place outside the applicant's country of residence; therefore, applicants must have a valid passport.
  • Candidates may be requested to give a seminar as part of the interview procedure.
  • Interview travel expenses will be reimbursed by EMBO.
  • Candidates are expected to travel by second-class rail for journeys of up to 8 hours.
  • Travel by economy class air will be refunded 
  • Subsistence and accommodation expenses are refunded up to the EMBO standard daily rate.
