About The Program

JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme 2019 is designed to provide promising, highly qualified, young researchers with the opportunity to conduct advanced research relevant to the main thematic focus areas of the UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS, Tokyo) in cooperation with host researchers at Japanese universities and research institutions. The fellowships are awarded for a period of 24 months. There is a monthly maintenance allowance of JPY 362,000 and other benefits for the awarded fellows.

EligibilityDeadline Date: Closed

To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • Be a PhD degree holder in a related field
  • Have demonstrated research skills in similar areas
  • Have the ability to design and implement research involving fieldwork
  • Be fluent in English besides having a working knowledge of other languages

Note: Those who have previously been awarded a Standard or Pathway Fellowship under the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan scheme are not eligible.

  • Round-trip air ticket (based on JSPS regulations)
  • Monthly maintenance allowance of JPY 362,000
  • Settling allowance of JPY 200,000 (based on JSPS regulations)
  • An overseas travel, accident and sickness insurance coverage etc

Step 2: Provide information on name, current appointment, date of birth, nationality etc.
Step 3: Provide information on Doctoral degree, PhD dissertation topic, the field of specialization, proposed research title etc.
Step 4: Complete the form and send by email to fellowships@unu.edu

  • The required documents indicated in the application form must be in English. If supporting documents are not in English, English translations must be attached.
  • Review of applications by the fellowship committee will begin immediately after the application deadline.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for a telephonic interview and to provide reference letters.
  • The JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme begins on 1 September and the selected Fellows are required to be in Japan by this date.
  • UNU-IAS will act as the nominating authority of the programme and applications should be submitted to UNU-IAS, which will assist in securing acceptance from host researchers for shortlisted candidates. 
  • Japanese nationals are not eligible, nor are those of dual nationality if one is Japanese.
  • Candidates who have permanent residency in Japan are not eligible.
