About The Program

The Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) invites applications for the JASNA Essay Contest 2019 from High school/University/Graduate school students. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's novel 'Northanger Abbey', this contest has been organized to reward the best essays and honour the memory of the outstanding writer. The winner of the essay contest has the opportunity to win a scholarship grant of up to USD 1000.

The contest will be held worldwide in 3 division: 

  • High School- Students enrolled at the high school level at the time of the contest.
  • College/ University- Students enrolled in at least 6 credit hours of course work at a college/university.
  • Graduate School- Students enrolled in at least 3 credit hours of course work at a graduate school leading to an advanced degree.
Benefits

The selected scholars will receive the following benefits: 

  • USD 1000 scholarship grant for the 1st prize along with free registration and 2 nights’ lodging for JASNA’s upcoming Annual General Meeting
  • USD 500 scholarship grant for 2nd prize
  • USD 250 scholarship grant for 3rd prize
  • Publication of the best essay on the official website of JASNA 
  • Winners and their mentors each receive a 1-year JASNA membership along with a set of Norton Critical Editions of Jane Austen's novels. 

Note: Transportation will not be provided by the society to the conference for the winners. 

How can you apply?

Follow the steps to apply: 

Step 1: Write an essay on the following topic related to Jane Austen's novel ' Northanger Abbey': 
"Northanger Abbey can be described as a book about books. There is, of course, the well-known "defense of the novel,” but characters also
discuss their reading habits, name specific novels and even consider history books. In her works, Austen often makes use of fiction, poetry
or plays, either explicitly or indirectly. Explore how she does this in Northanger Abbey. Depending on your division, you may need to bring in one or more other novels as well." 
Step 2: Fill in the application form with the required details.
Step 3: Attach the required documents along with the application.
Step 4: Submit the application along with attached documents.

Note: Mention the subject of the email as 'JASNA'.

Terms and Conditions
  • The acknowledgement email will include a copy of the information that the applicant has submitted. Please check the "junk mail" folder if the message on the regular box folder is not seen. 
  • Duplicate submissions are not allowed.
  • The essay must be written only in English.
  • The title of the essay should appear at the top of page one and the student’s name must not appear on the essay.
  • The essay must be in MLA format (double-spaced and in 12-point type throughout, with one-inch margins on all sides of each page).
  • The essay must be 6-8 pages in length, not including the Works Cited page.

Q. Do the applicants have to join JASNA before they can submit an essay?
A.
No, applicants do not have to be a JASNA member to enter the contest.

 

Q. When are the Essay Contest winners announced?
A.
The names of the winners will be released on the official website in the month of August.  Winners will be contacted before their names are posted on the website.

 

Q. How is the award money sent?
A.
Winners will be asked how they prefer to receive their awards.  Bank fees for checks or wire deposits are the responsibility of the winner.
