About The Program

The Goi Peace Foundation, Japan invites applications for the International Essay Contest for Young People 2019 from candidates up to the age of 25 years. This program is an activity within the framework of the UNESCO Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The objective of the annual essay contest is to harness the energy, creativity, and initiative of the world's youth in promoting a culture of peace and sustainable development with an aim to inspire the society to learn from young minds and to give a thought on how each and every one of us can make a difference in the world. The winner has the opportunity to win up to JPY 100,000 as a reward.

The contest will be held under 2 categories for everyone under the age of 25 years old in the following way: 

  • Children
    • Applicants up to 14 years of age will fall under the 'Children' category. 
  •  Youth 
    • Applicants in the age group of 15-25 years of will fall under the 'Youth' category  

Note: The applicants can apply both solely or with a group of people under the 'Individual' and 'School/Group' categories respectively.

Benefits

The selected winners under the Children’s category and Youth category respectively will receive the award in the following way: 

  • JPY 100,000 and a certificate as the 1st prize for 1 entrant 
  • JPY 50,000 and a certificate as the 2nd prize for 2 entrants 
  • A certificate and a gift as the 3rd prize for 5 entrants
  • A certificate and gift as an honourable mention for 25 entrants
How can you apply?

Follow the below steps to apply:

ONLINE: 

Step 1: Write an essay on the topic- “Creating a Society Full of Kindness” including a cover page.
Step 2: Register at the online scholarship portal when the essay is written. 
Step 3: Fill in the application form with the required details 
Step 4: Attach the necessary documents to the application 
Step 5: Submit the application form 

 

BY POST: 

Step 1: Write an essay on the topic- “Creating a Society Full of Kindness” including a cover page.   
Step 2: Register at the online scholarship portal when the essay is written. 
Step 3: Print a hard copy and fill in the application form with the required details.
Step 4: Attach the necessary documents to the application.
Step 5: Submit the application form by sending it by post to the following address:

Terms and Conditions
  • The applicant has to answer the following questions in his/her submission:
    • What does “Kindness” mean to you?
    • How do you think we can create a kinder society?
  • The applicant should carry out 10 acts of kindness, and then use his/her experience as inspiration in writing the essay (the essay itself does not need to be about the applicant's acts of kindness).
  • As a special edition, this year’s contest involves action in addition to writing, so that participating in the contest directly contributes to creating a better world. Please note, however, that only the essay itself will be considered in the selection process.
  • The essay must be 700 words or less in English, French, Spanish or German, or 1600 characters or less in Japanese, excluding essay title and cover page.
  • The essays may be typed or printed.
  • Entries submitted by postal mail must include a cover page  indicating the following:
    • Applicants name
    • Category (Children or Youth)
    • Age as of June 15, 2019
    • Gender
    • Nationality
    • Address
    • E-mail
    • Phone number
    • School name (if applicable)
    • Essay title
    • Language
    • Word count
    • List of ten acts of kindness that the applicant has performed (describe briefly).
