INSPIRE Fellowship 2022-23 is an initiative of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India for graduate/postgraduate degree holders. The fellowship provides a standing opportunity to pursue doctoral research at any recognized university or institute in India through fellowships at the same level as National Eligibility Test (NET) qualified candidates. The selected fellows will receive a grant as per GoI norms for a maximum period of five years or completion of the Ph.D. degree (whichever is earlier).

  • INSPIRE Fellowship 2022-23

    To be eligible, an applicant must - 

    • be an INSPIRE scholar 
    • have secured a minimum of 70% marks (or CGPA equivalent) in aggregate at M.Sc. or Integrated M.S./M.Sc. degree OR
    • be a 1st rank holder at the university level examination in postgraduate (PG) level examinations in Basic/ Applied Sciences including Engineering, Medical, Pharmaceutical, Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences from any recognized University and academic institution in India, OR
    • be a 1st rank holder at the graduate/ postgraduate level examination in Medicine only conducted by a university/institution in India


    Note - Candidates who are Indian citizens and have acquired their eligibility for INSPIRE Fellowship during the years 2020 and 2021 are eligible to apply.


    A total of 1,000 fellows will be selected under this scheme. The selected fellows will receive as per GoI norms for a maximum period of five years or completion of the Ph.D. degree (whichever is earlier).

    • Passport size photograph [in JPEG format; size - 50KB]
    • Age certificate
    • Class 10 marksheet or certificate (for proof of Date of Birth) [PDF format; size 1 MB]
    • Marksheets of educational qualifications (like 12th, UG & PG Program) [PDF format; size 1 MB]
    • First Rank certificate for applicants who are not INSPIRE scholars [PDF format; size 1 MB]
    • Appointment letter (if employed) [PDF format; size 1 MB]
    • Endorsement letter [PDF format; size 1 MB]
    • For the applicants already enrolled in PhD. programme - 
      • Admission Letter (issued by University Authorities i.e. Registrar, Dean, Director, etc. Only joining as JRF will not be acceptable, in such case you should submit as non-Ph.D. scholar) [PDF format; size 1 MB]
      • Fee receipt for Ph. D. admission [PDF format; size 1 MB]
      • Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the Ph. D. Supervisor [PDF format; size 1 MB]
      • Endorsement Letter [PDF format; size 1 MB]
      • Research Proposal 
      • Methodology and Workplan, if required [PDF format; size 2 MB]
    • For the applicants already enrolled in PhD. programme - 
      • Three choices of University/Institute and supervisors 
      • Brief tentative write-up of the research proposal
    How can you apply?

    Eligible candidates can apply for the fellowship using the below-mentioned steps - 
    Step 1: Click on the 'Apply Now' button.
    Step 2: Click on the 'Register' button and fill in the required details to 'Register'. (Note - If already registered, log in using Gmail/Mobile number/Email Id.)
    Step 3: Navigate to 'How to Apply' section and click on the given link.
    Step 4: Fill in the required details to 'Register'. (Note - If the applicant is already registered, then directly login using valid credentials.)
    Step 5: After successfully registering, login with a valid login ID and password.
    Step 6: Fill in the required details, upload the supporting documents and submit the application form.

Application Start Date - 25th November 2022
Application Deadline - 10th February 2023

Selection Criteria

The selection of the candidates will be done in two stages i.e. level 1 and level 2.

Applicants who are already admitted to Ph.D. program in S&T prior to submitting the application and selected at both level 1 & level 2, will be awarded the final offer for the INSPIRE fellowship.

Applicants who have not been admitted to Ph.D. program in S&T prior to submitting the application and get selected at level 1, will be awarded a provisional offer for INSPIRE fellowship.

The provisional offer will be made based on the scrutiny of the application along with the required documents (level 1) submitted by the applicant. However, the final offer will be made based on the evaluation of the application at level 2 considering the following factors - 

  • Academic merit  
  • Host Institution including Research Supervisor profile and
  • Detailed Research Proposal by the Subject Expert Committee (s)

At Level 2, the applicants are required to secure a qualifying score/cutoff based on the subject expert committee(s) recommendations and approval of the competent authority. The cut-off marks may vary based on the competitive framework of the selection process.

Note - Provisional offer does not guarantee the award of INSPIRE fellowship.

Terms and Conditions
  • Applications must be submitted through online mode only.
  • The application will not be accepted in any other mode except online mode.
  • Incomplete or wrongly filled-up applications or applications lacking essential documents shall be summarily rejected.
  • Applicant’s own valid and functional email address must be used for submission of online application.
  • The status of the application shall be informed only through INSPIRE Web Portal. The applicant needs to login into their (registered) account to view the status.
  • The candidates are not required to send any hard copy of the application form to DST. 
  • Incomplete or wrongly filled up applications or applications lacking essential documents will be summarily rejected.
  • Following students are not eligible to apply for the INSPIRE fellowship -
    • 1st rank holder in College including Autonomous College Examination
    • Have obtained a degree (s) through Distance Education Mode and
    • 1st Rank Holder in any specialization given at M.Sc. 2nd/ last year
  • The fellowship will not be available to pursue M.Sc. or M.Phil. or M. Tech. course while pursuing Integrated M.Sc.- Ph.D./ M. Phil.-Ph.D./ M. TechPh.D. courses.
