To be eligible, an applicant must:-
- be an Indian citizen or people of Indian origin including PIO/NRI status
- be 32 years of age as of 1st January 2024 (For General category)
- be 37 years of age as of 1st January 2024 (For SC/ST/Women candidates)
- be 42 years of age as of 1st January 2024 (For persons with disability)
- be a 1st rank holder with a minimum of 70% marks or equivalent CGPA in a postgraduate level examination in basic/applied sciences (including engineering, pharmacy, medicine, agricultural, veterinary) OR
- be an INSPIRE scholar with a minimum of 70% marks or equivalent CGPA in M.Sc. or Integrated M.S./ M.Sc. course
Note:-
- Applicants must obtain 1st rank in a university/institution situated in India.
- 1st rank must be obtained in a course/program with a batch size of a minimum of 7 students.
- Age limit for SC/ST/women applicants is 37 years.
- Age limit for persons with disabilities is 42 years.
- Merely fulfilling the eligibility criteria will not guarantee an applicant the final offer for the fellowship.
Benefits
The selected candidates will receive financial assistance along with a contingency grant to pursue their studies. House Rent Allowance (HRA) will be provided as per government norms and the location of the host institution.
Note:-
- This fellowship is available for pursuing a full-time Ph.D. program in any recognized university / institution/R&D laboratory in India.
- The total fellowship tenure is 5 years or till completion of the Ph.D. program, whichever is earlier.
- The fellowship will be effective from the date of acceptance into the Ph.D. program.
- The fellowship will be disbursed to the host institution’s bank account by the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi.

Selection Criteria
The candidates will be selected through a three-tier selection process – an evaluation by discipline-based expert committees, followed by the recommendations of the apex level committee and INSPIRE faculty award council. Based on the recommendations of these Committees, DST will make the final selection.
Selected candidates will be notified via the web portal within 6 months from the last date of submission of the application.

Terms and Conditions
Issue of Fellowship
- The candidate cannot avail of any other fellowship/funding.
- If the candidate is receiving a fellowship or funding from any other source before their selection, the INSPIRE Fellowship will take effect after switching from any such sources.
Change of Host Institution
The fellow can avail the permission to change their host institution only under extraordinary circumstances from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) by submitting the following documents:
- No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the respective host institutes and research supervisors
- Detailed justifications for change/transfer of host institute for implementation of the fellowship
- Ph.D. research area with an up-to-date technical progress report
- CV of the research supervisor at the new host institute
- Up-to-date financial statement of expenditure from the initial host institute (in case the fellowship grant has been released to the initial host Institute of the INSPIRE Fellow).
Duties of Fellow
- Update the DST on every research progress made during the fellowship tenure.
- Must complete the program within 5 years, i.e. the fellowship tenure.
- Not undertake any assignment other than any approved ones related to the Ph.D. program
- Acknowledgement of the support from DST in every publication, patent, and thesis.
- Submission of soft copies of every patent/research paper to INSPIRE program division on DST by speed post in a USB.
- Inform DST of any disciplinary action taken by the host institution against the fellow.
Internship
- Fellows are allowed to avail of a maximum research internship tenure of 18 months while under the fellowship.
- The fellow must obtain prior permission from DST-INSPIRE on the recommendation of the Ph.D. supervisor as well as confirmation from the research internship provider.
- In case the fellow receives full financial support for the internship from the overseas institution, the INSPIRE Fellowship for the period of overseas stay will not be remitted.
- the fellow must submit his/her internship report as well as joining report to the host institution, with intimation to the DST.
Completion
- Fellows must settle their claims strictly within one year of leaving the Fellowship.
- To settle the claims, the fellow must upload the following documents to the INSPIRE web portal account:
- A copy of the Ph.D. degree certificate,
- Ph.D. completion/discontinuation report,
- Statement of Expenditure (SE) and Utilization certificate (UC) of complete fellowship duration,
- Unspent balance receipt if any
- The fellow must submit a soft copy of any Ph.D. thesis/published research paper/patent details via speed post to the INSPIRE program division of the DST in a USB.
Termination
- The termination of the fellowship will occur if:
- The fellowship is not accepted within 30 days of the final offer.
- The candidate resigns before being awarded the Ph.D. degree.
- The candidate changes the host institution without prior approval.
- The candidate provides incomplete/incorrect information.
- The candidate changes the host institution without prior approval of the DST.
- Upon successful completion of the fellowship tenure or the Ph.D. program.
- In case of termination of fellowship on unethical grounds, INSPIRE Fellow is liable to refund the completely released INSPIRE Fellowship grant with interest.
