About The Program

The Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi seeks applications for the Indo-Japanese Young Researcher Fellowship Programme 2018-19 from outstanding Indian young scientists/researchers. This programme supported by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India aims to select 10 PhD holders and provide them the opportunity to work in top institutions in Japan for a duration of 2 to 6 months. It intends to facilitate long-term collaboration between India and Japan in science & technology.

To be eligible for the scholarship, a candidate must -

  • Be an Indian citizen, residing in India.
  • Be a postdoc and/or a scientist/faculty member working in a regular capacity in a UGC recognized University/Deemed University/Academic Institute or National Research & Development Laboratory/Institute.
  • Be actively engaged in research work in the related areas.
  • Have been awarded the PhD degree within the past 6 years.
  • Be less than 40 years of age as on the last date of submission.
  • Have not availed any overseas fellowship in the previous 3 years.
  • Have been accepted to work in an institute/laboratory in Japan.
Benefits

This fellowship will be for a duration of 2 to 6 months and will include monthly maintenance allowance, international airfare, visa charges, medical insurance and contingency. The distribution will be as follows -

  • Monthly maintenance allowance: JPY 3,62,000 per month per person
  • International airfare: INR 75,000
  • Visa charges, medical insurance and contingency: INR 25,000

The applicant will need to bear all other costs himself/herself.

Documents

The following documents need to be submitted during the application procedure -

  • The duly filled application form as per the format.
  • A self-attested copy of PhD degree.
  • A no-objection certificate from the parent university/institute.
  • A brief CV.
  • Invitation letter from the Japanese host.
  • A list of 10 best publications.
How can you apply?

The eligible candidates can apply through the following steps -

Step 1: Download application form from the INSA website here.
Step 2: Fill in all necessary details in the form.
Step 3: Attach the documents mentioned in the guidelines.
Step 4: Send a complete set of application form duly forwarded by the Head of the Institution/University to the below-given address -

Also, email the soft copy of the duly completed application form to insadstjsps@gmail.com. Include Name and Area of Research in the subject line of the Email. The soft copy filename should be saved as 'Name of Applicant_Area of Research'.

Selection Criteria

The following factors will be kept in mind while assessing the proposals -

  • Scientific merit of the research.
  • Achievements of the applicant.
  • The aptness of the work in the context of the proposed research in Japan.
  • Value of the expected outcome of the research.
  • Expected benefit to the Indo-Japanese collaboration.

  • Except for the mentioned benefits, all other costs will have to be born by the applicant only.
  • All travels from India must be on or before 31st January 2019. No extension in the date of departure will be entertained.
  • Applicants engaged in multi-disciplinary research can apply but should note that proposals for research solely in humanities, social or behavioural science are not eligible to apply.
  • The grant scheme is not to supplement or extend either study or sabbatical leave that is being conducted overseas.
  • Successful applicants are required to submit Visit Report/s within 2 months after returning to India.
  • Applications received after the last date will not be considered in any case.
