About The Program

Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) Doctoral Fellowship 2018 is a 2-years full-time research work program in India only, offered only to the scholars registered for the PhD program in any of the following discipline of the social science. The main aim of the ICSSR Post-Doctoral Fellowship is to empower and hold young Indian social science researchers.

The discipline of social science are as follows:

  • Sociology and Social Anthropology
  • Political Science / Public Administration
  • Economics
  • International Studies
  • Social Geography and Population Studies
  • Commerce and Management
  • Social Psychology
  • Education
  • Social Linguistics / Socio-Cultural Studies
  • Law / International Law
  • National Security & Strategic Studies
  • Other allied Social Science disciplines (Library Science, Social Work, Media Studies, Modern Social History, Health Studies, Gender Studies, Environmental Studies, Diaspora Studies, Area Studies, Sanskrit-Society & Culture etc.) to promote interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research

EligibilityDeadline Date: Closed
  • The candidates must have registered in a PhD program from a UGC recognized Indian universities, deemed universities or colleges having University approved PhD programme
  • The candidates must have scored a minimum of 50% marks in graduation and 55% marks in post graduation or equivalent grades in any Social Science disciplines (5% marks relaxation for SC/ST candidate)
  • NET/SLET/MPhil from a recognized university or the candidates who are registered after qualifying Research Entrance Test (RET) conducted by a university
  • The applicant must be 40 years or below at the time of application (age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/Persons with Benchmark Disability)
Benefits

Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellowship

  • The value of the fellowship is INR 16000 pm and contingency grant is INR 15000 pa (for 2 years)

Institutional Doctoral Fellowship

  • The duration and value of fellowship will be the same as mentioned under the Centrally Administered Doctoral Fellowship

Short-term Doctoral Fellowship

  • The value of fellowship is INR 16000 pm and a contingency grant of INR 7500 for the duration of the Fellowship (for 6 months)

Contingency Grant

  • This is a one-time grant not exceeding INR 50000
Documents

The research proposal should be in two parts:

  • Abstract of the research proposal in about 300 words
  • Detailed research proposal of about 3000 words which is an indicative outline for the detailed research proposal, the format should be as below:
    • Title
    • Introduction
    • Objectives of the Study
    • Research Questions or Hypotheses
    • Review of Literature (National & International)
    • Research Methodology
    • Relevance and Anticipated Outcomes
    • Tentative Chapterisation
    • Bibliography

Note: ​​Bibliography should be prepared in Chicago Manual Style

Terms and Conditions
  • The fellows have to stay and work full time at the affiliating University/Institute, however, they have to go for a fieldwork sometimes
  • The fellowship is only for the two years and can be extended under some exceptional circumstances
  • The contingency grant can be utilized for books, stationery, computer-related costs, and field work expense
  • The ICSSR has all the rights to publish the PhD thesis
  • The fellow must not receive the fellowship from any other source
  • Privilege will be given to the less represented sections such as women and person belonging to Educationally Backward Areas/Districts, minority community, etc
  • The ICSSR reserves the right to cancel any application without prior notice
